News from our Principal

Dear Parents and carers,

I’d like to thank you and acknowledge your support and energy throughout Term 1. Your sons and daughters have all worked very hard at achieving their goals with determination and passion. They have been supported and challenged by their teachers with the many opportunities offered to them to engage them in their learning. We look forward to doing it all over again next term after a good rest in the holidays!

I’d like to thank two of my Parent Representatives- Anna Giovenco and Nicola Ainsworth for their outstanding commitment and work in organising the Parent Trivia Night last weekend. It was an extremely successful event held in our hall with over 150 parents and teachers in attendance. There were some great prizes and a silent auction that altogether raised close to $6,900! Thank you for your generosity and support in making our school a place where community is alive. Thank you also to the many people and businesses who made donations in some way to ensure the success of the evening. The money raised will contribute to funds that will be spent on playground upgrades.

I remind you to take note of the update to some procedures and guidelines for parents when interacting with teachers and the school that was sent out separately yesterday through Compass. When we all work together to ensure that everyone is respected and feels safe we can ensure that our school and our community has the opportunity to thrive and flourish!

Acts of Kindness

We all want our kids to feel good and be happy. Doing good is the key to living a more meaningful and happier existence. Modern research bears it out- altruistic behaviours are associated with greater wellbeing, health and longevity. In short, we feel good when we do good. And interestingly, people who feel good are more open to learning,  have better psychological and physical resilience, less stress, anger, anxiety and depression, and more gratitude, empathy and compassion. The happiness that comes from doing good for others seems to last longer and feel deeper.

Every parent wants happy kids.

But how many of us knew that if you want kids to be happy, you should teach them to be kind. They know it makes them happy. The desire to help is something children are born with - even that child of yours, that doesn’t seem to want to help anymore. Bottom line, kids want to help, and it makes them feel great. So it’s our job to help fulfill this natural inclination by guiding them to age appropriate opportunities to do so.

Here are some ways to do that:

1. Be a good role model

2. Perform small acts of kindness- say something nice to someone is just as powerful and effective as a bigger act of kindness

3. Make helping a family project- get your kids involved when you are helping others- eg. taking a meal to a family in need

4. Be a good neighbour- teach your kids to notice what goes on in the neighbourhood and community.

5. Be grateful- Expressing gratitude is one of the best ways to do good. In fact, nothing can improve your life (and the life of others) like gratitude. This holiday break spend time with your children teaching them to be kind and to be helpful.

Finally, enjoy the holiday break with each other. May the risen Lord fill your heart with hope and joy this Easter and may the blessings of the season bring you new life.
