Respectful Relationships and Berry Street

🌏🎉 Harmony Day Celebration🎉🌏

On Thursday, our school came together to celebrate Harmony Day, a special event that highlights the importance of inclusivity, respect, and belonging for everyone. Students and staff embraced the spirit of the day by wearing a touch of orange and participating in activities that encouraged understanding and appreciation of different cultures. From music, sport and dance to art and storytelling, it was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity within our school.

A huge congratulations and thank you to our incredible Wellbeing Leaders for organising such a meaningful and engaging event. Your hard work and dedication ensured that Harmony Day was a truly memorable experience for all. Harmony Day reminds us that “Everyone Belongs” and this celebration was a beautiful reflection of that message.

Ten things I wish you knew about your child's mental health

(Dr Billy Garvey) Free audiobook on Spotify premium!

Billy Garvey is a developmental paediatrician at the RCH with over 20 years of experience working with children and families in various settings, conducting research in child development and mental health. Mr Collis, Miss Pennington and I were lucky enough to hear Billy speak last week to best support students who are vulnerable to, or showing signs of disengaging from school. Billy spoke about the impact of co-regulation and the notion that some kids need to be celebrated for going through doors and showing up each day.

So what is co-regulation?  It is not about temporarily calming a child down, but it’s the process through which a child develops the ability to self-regulate emotions in the long term.   A critical factor in this process is the presence of a reliable caregiver. The caregiver acts as a ‘second brain’ — an extra calming centre that brings in support for the child with their own state of nervous system regulation.  Co-regulation starts with regulating your own feelings first and then approaching your child in a calm and understanding manner.  This article shares great insights to effective co-regulation strategies for children of all ages.

Billy is also one of the hosts the Pop Culture Parenting Podcast, which blends expert insights with pop culture references to provide practical strategies for parents and caregivers.

A big thank you to our amazing teachers, staff, and families for your ongoing support and dedication to student wellbeing. Your encouragement helps make our school a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Have a wonderful holiday! See you next term!
