Literacy at St Columba’s – An Overview with Nicole 8:45am - 9:15am
We will begin the morning with Nicole, our PYP Coordinator, who will share an engaging overview of our whole-school approach to teaching literacy.
Nicole will explain how we use a range of research-based programs like Daily 5, CAFE, Read Write Inc., SMART Spelling, and Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops to build strong foundations in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
You will hear how our approach supports student voice, goal-setting, and growth, and how we ensure every child is both supported and challenged through differentiated, high-impact teaching.
She will also explain how our literacy practices align with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and the MACS Vision for Instruction, ensuring we provide learning that is rigorous, engaging, and inclusive for all learners.
Literacy in Action – A Classroom Writing Focus 9:15am - 9:45am
After the overview, you will head into your child’s classroom, where the focus will be on writing.
You will be invited to:
- Hear a short explanation of how writing is taught at your child’s year level.
- Explore your child’s past writing, celebrate their growth, and reflect on their personal goals.
- Watch students begin new pieces or revise current ones, drawing on strategies, mentor texts, and conversations.
- Join in the learning through shared vocabulary exploration, reflection, and feedback with your child.
This session will highlight the powerful ways students at St Columba’s learn to express their ideas, craft their voice, and see themselves as writers with stories worth sharing.
We’re looking forward to sharing this special morning with you.
