Literacy

In Literacy we continue to learn Stage 7.2 phonemes and graphemes, such as /oo/ and /le/.

In Writing, we have been practising how to correctly use a comma to separate items in a list and to use the conjunction ‘and’ between the last two items. Students have also been taught how to identify proper nouns and common nouns as well as pronouns. Using this new knowledge, we then use Story Champs to write our own creative narrative texts!

In Health, Year 2 students have been learning about the Digestive System. We have explored how fuelling our bodies with healthful foods and participating in physical activity helps to keep us strong and healthy. Students have learned about cells, tissues and organs that work together to keep our bodies strong.

Numeracy

Year 2 students have been building upon their addition skills to solve problems more efficiently. We have explored using number lines, bar models and the split strategy to add two digit numbers. Students have particularly enjoyed practising the split strategy where they partition numbers into tens and ones, applying their knowledge of place value to addition problems.

Students have also been learning how to estimate and measure mass. We have used balance scales and digital scales to measure and compare grams. Students have enjoyed estimating the weight of several items and discovering how accurate their predictions are.

Social and Emotional Learning

Year 2 students have been learning about reconciliation in to support our understanding of National Reconciliation Week. We have discussed the importance of connecting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to acknowledge and celebrate their culture. We participated in a whole school smoking ceremony and performance where students were able to learn about the importance of dance and connection to land.
