Term 2 has been a busy term of learning for our Year 1 students and they are all very excited abut our upcoming Health Education excursion to Go Climb in Week 10. Here is a snapshot of all the marvellous learning occurring in Hub 3 over the last month!
In Phonics, we have finished Stage 6 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program and have just started learning Stage 7.1. Students have developed their skills in reading and spelling words with the digraphs /ph/ and /wh/. We are now learning about the digraphs /ai/ and /ay/, as well as the rule for when to use each one. During Let’s spell and Let’s Write activities, the students have been using their segmenting and blending skills to spell words, write phrases and sentences using the focus graphemes of the week.
In Writing, we have been learning about using the conjunctions ‘but’, ‘because’ and ‘so’ to join two ideas in a sentence and add more information. We have also started exploring the elements of informative texts by learning about the difference between a fact and and opinion.
In Knowledge, we have been learning all about human body systems through our Health unit. So far we have focused on the skeletal system, muscular system and the respiratory system. Students have tested their muscular strength by doing the plank and observed how their breathing changes when they are exercising and then when they rest. Students have learnt many new words about the human body and have enjoyed completing Kahoots to test their new knowledge on human body systems.
Students have been learning to retell a story using story elements explicitly taught in the Story Champs program. They demonstrate their knowledge of story elements by retelling the story verbally first and then by writing a retell in a narrative structure that includes the character, setting, problem, feeling, rising action, ending and end feeling.
In Numeracy, we have been learning about addition and different ways to solve addition problems. Students have used concrete materials, pictorials and number lines to model addition and practise counting on from the larger number to solve equations more efficiently.
During Social and Emotional learning, we explored why it is important to be encouraging and helpful to others and how this helps us create a positive community. Students discussed ways that they could encourage and help others at home and at school. They then traced their hand and in each finger wrote about ways they could be helpful and encouraging.
During Auslan lessons, we have been learning to sign different feelings and greetings. We practised feeling signs by following along to the Feelings Song.
