Gwaali Workshop - Barraba

Mrs Ryan and Miss Dorrington had the privilege of travelling with these students to St Joseph's School Barraba to participate in a Gwaali (Talk) workshop facilitated by the Armidale Catholic Schools Office.

This workshop was a rich learning experience that provided a deeper understanding of the upcoming CSNSW Conference and its theme - 'Spirit on Country: Learning Together - Then, Now and Always.' We also engaged in a student identity lesson where we created a family tree, a task that fostered a sense of belonging and cultural awareness. All school family trees will be combined to create a Gwaali Family Tree, a collaborative project that will acknowledge all of these students participating in the very important role of sharing the story of Myall Creek at the conference.

All students then had the opportunity to begin learning the traditional Gamilaraay Aboriginal Language, a cultural skill that will be further developed in our schools as we prepare to share the story at the conference.

Thank you to Ms Tighe and her team for facilitating a wonderful cultural learning experience. We look forward to our next workshop in September.

A visit from previous students at Sacred Heart

Today, we welcomed some special visitors into our school: Geraldine Smith, daughter Theresa Ruig, and granddaughters Grace, Sophia, and Amelia. Both Geraldine and Theresa are Alumni of Sacred Heart School. Theresa, who served as a Vice Captain in 1984, faced a significant challenge at the age of 10 when she began losing sight. Despite this, Theresa refused to let her vision impairment hinder her from achieving remarkable feats. She has completed a Bachelor of Commerce with Honors and pursued her studies further to earn a PhD, a testament to her unwavering resilience.

The impact of Theresa's visit on the children at Sacred Heart was profound. They listened in awe as she shared her life journey, filled with the triumphs over her vision impairment. We were also fortunate to meet her loyal companion, 'Jango', a beautiful black labrador who serves as her seeing-eye dog. Theresa graciously shared insights into the training process for a seeing-eye dog and the commands she uses with Jango. Her daughters, Grace, Sophia, and Amelia, removed Jango's harness so he was no longer 'working', and we all had a delightful time petting him.

Theresa's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. She has shown us that no obstacle, no matter how daunting, should deter us from pursuing our dreams. Her story is a beacon of hope, inspiring us all to reach for the stars.
