Welcome Hayley

This week we officially welcome Hayley Thomas to Scotsburn and into SC1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays! We look forward to her becoming part of the Scotsburn Campus very quickly. If you get a chance to pop in over the next few weeks, please introduce yourself and welcome her to the campus.

Parent Community Road Safety Meeting - This Friday 7th June

What: Scotsburn Road Safety Meeting

When: Friday, 7th June

Time: 9:30am - 10am

Where: Scotsburn Campus - outside campus in front of the main gate.

Our Parent Community Road Safety meeting is this Friday. As we have mentioned, we would love as many members of our parent community to be present. If you are unable to make it please email any concerns or comments regarding road safety around the campus to Jarrod prior to the meeting.

We would like to hold a short catch up prior to the meeting, so that we can all be on the same page and present a united stance. This meeting will take place after school on Thursday in SC2, for any parents who can come along to support the meeting. We will aim for 3:40pm, after the bus travellers have departed.

A massive thank you to those parents who have raised concerns and continually have the safety of our families and community at heart. Let’s hope for a positive result from this meeting.

Mrs Anderson Holiday!

As we know, Mrs Anderson and her family have headed off on a holiday this week to chase some sun. Lucky ducks! This means that Mrs Cooper will be in this week on Monday, Thursday and Friday in SC1. Mrs Cooper is a very familiar face to everyone at Scotsburn and we will love having her back for the week. Mrs Anderson will be back in class next Thursday 13th June.

Reconciliation Week and “Wear it Yellow” Day

Last week the Scotsburn campus participated in a range of activities and presentations to acknowledge Reconciliation Week as well as “Wear it Yellow” Day. The key themes of acknowledging our country’s indigenous history, equal opportunity, and promoting diversity were spread across each day in many different ways. Students loved the didgeridoo workshop with Mr Rodgers. Thanks to Zoe and her family for bringing in some indigenous artefacts to support the week.

Sustainability Family Group

Last Friday in the sustainability group, students worked extremely hard on some yard maintenance jobs. The big jobs to complete included putting together some new metal garden beds, as well as levelling out the sand in the gaga pit. Our students at Scotsburn always do an amazing job in helping upkeep our yard, and understand the importance of developing pride in our school and its surroundings. Awesome job everyone!

Scotsburn Assembly this Friday

This Friday we will hold our next Scotsburn Assembly. This will be held in the shed at 3pm. As always, feel free to pop in early and grab a warm drink or a bite to eat in the old building. We hope to see you there!

Container Deposit Scheme

We are very excited to share that we have joined with McCallum Disability Services and BRI to recycle all eligible containers that we collect at our school, through the Commercial Container Collection Scheme (CCCD).

Both campuses of our school will receive collection bins to place the containers in, with these collected by McCallum as needed.

Our school will receive 7 cents per container, with the remaining 3 cents contributing towards pickup and collection fees.

This is a win-win situation, with the school receiving additional fundraising money to put towards various projects at each campus, while at the same time helping to support sustainable employment for people living with a disability. Not to mention the environmental benefits of recycling!

We welcome any families or members of the community who would like to donate their containers to support our fundraising efforts to drop them off at the main office at Scotsburn.

All containers eligible for the 10 cent refund through the Container Deposit Scheme in Victoria are welcome.

Thanks in advance!!!

King’s Birthday Holiday

A reminder that next Monday 10th June is the King’s Birthday holiday. We hope all of our Scotsburn families can enjoy a wonderful long weekend!

Grade 5/6 BioCats Excursion - Tuesday 11th June

Next Tuesday 11th June, Grade 5/6 students will be heading off on an excursion to BioCATS, which is run at the Deakin Cats Community centre at the GMHBA Stadium in Geelong. Our Scotsburn Grade 5/6 Students will be joining 5/6GR and 5/6JO for the excursion.

This program is only run for Grades 5/6 each year, and therefore will be available to our Grade 3/4 students in the coming years. On the day next Tuesday, our SC2 3/4 students will join SC1 for the day at Scotsburn with Mrs Thomas.

5/6 students are required to be at school no later than 8:30am for a prompt 8:40am departure. We are expected to arrive back to school at 3:15pm and students will be dismissed at the usual school time (3:30pm).

BioCATS is a partnership program between BioLAB and the Geelong Cats. The program explores how scientists, mathematicians and technology is used to help athletes analyse and refine their performance and technique to gain the winning edge.

Students will be participating in dynamic scientific experiments, using problem solving, statistical analysis and observation skills to learn about the science and maths of football and career pathways in sport. This program also reinforces the concepts of health and wellness and the benefits that come from sport participation.

All students are required to wear full school uniform (they are welcome to bring a change of shoes) and their snack, lunch and a labelled drink bottle on the day.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jarrod.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

As mentioned above and last week on Compass, we welcome Hayley into SC1! It was lovely to spend time in the classroom with Hayley last week, showing her our routines and what a lovely little team we have in SC1. It was so great to see how the students welcomed Hayley and they showcased our school values beautifully, making her feel welcome. I know Hayley is very excited to be working with us.

Last week in English, students started publishing their narratives. We went through the editing process and up-levelled our work to produce a more structured and well-written piece. It is brilliant to see some of our students now ‘coaching’ others through editing, assisting them with punctuation, word choice, and spelling.

In Maths, students have been learning to identify and continue number patterns. This has enabled some students to see the connection between skip counting and multiplication, which is terrific. We will continue this concept over the coming week as it leads us into division (share between).

As part of National Reconciliation Week, students have been involved with experiences both in class and at lunchtime. We have explored Australia’s reconciliation journey and connected it to accepting diversity.

Our robot-making is now underway with students having the opportunity last week to start building their robots. It is wonderful to hear and see all the great ‘robot inventions’ that are being developed.

Have a wonderful week and I will see you in Week 9.

Thanks,

Ana

SC2 Learning Snapshot

Last Friday in SC2 we finally had the opportunity to celebrate our work on fractions with a celebratory Pizza Fraction Day! Students worked in pairs to cut slices into fractions, discussing and determining what fraction of the pizza they were eating, as well as how to add and subtract fractions. As we cut the pieces in half, we also looked at the concept of equivalent fractions. This was certainly a yummy way to demonstrate our fraction knowledge!

In Writing, we have begun our persuasive writing unit, linking to our theme of space. Students have worked on creating a sizzling start and introduction, that includes persuasive devices such as emotive language, facts, and rhetorical questions.

Keep up the great work everyone with homework and home reading. We are all in such a good routine with this now and everyone is demonstrating great organisation and effort.

Let's keep this going until the end of term!

As always have an awesome week,

Jarrod and Liz

Specialist Learning Snapshot - Physical Education

This term students have been focusing on the skills of basketball and netball. SC1 has been particularly focusing on the skills of bouncing and dribbling. This has seen students complete a range of activities including an obstacle course! Strategies in invasion sports have been the focus for SC2. Over the last few weeks we have developed our knowledge of how to maintain possession of a ball and how to defend.

Please remember to wear runners and bring a drink bottle to school on Thursdays.

Thanks,

Rachel

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher.
