TRAFFIC SAFETY

The safety of our students is always the highest priority, however there have been a number of concerns just this week with the behaviour of drivers in Silk Street. 

Two focus areas this week following a near miss and a lack of patience.

1. Please do not use the driveways in Silk Street near the school to turn around; there is minimal room at that time of the day and children walking on footpaths. A group of children were nearly hit by a ute which reversed out of a driveway and couldn't see the children walking on the footpath. 
2. Please show courtesy and allow cars to turn into the Kiss and Drop driveway when sitting and waiting to get onto Lower Plenty Road.  

To ensure drivers are aware of the parking and road regulations near the school crossing, please find some of them listed below.

• Keep the crossing clear at all times
• Slow speed down to 40km/h (we want to look after Jennie's safety too)
• No parking within 20m before a crossing
• No parking within 10m after a crossing
• Do not double park and let children out of the car 
• You must not let children out of the car while waiting in an active crossing
• Pedestrians are required by law to use the crossing when the flags or superviser signs are displayed
• Please inform grandparents or others collecting the children that they are to use the crossing and not cross the road down near the Community Centre driveway. This is a highly busy area with 3-4 areas to be observing, so a danger to those crossing there.

CHILD SAFE STANDARDS

The Child Safe Standards are a set of 11 requirements that organisations must follow to create a culture and environment that is safe for children. These standards aim to prevent, respond to, and report child abuse by requiring organisations to implement policies, procedures, and practices that put children’s safety and well-being first. They were developed in response to inquiries and recommendations from Royal Commissions and aim to drive cultural change within organisations that provide services or facilities for children.

This year, the plan for all MACS Schools is to learn more about each standard - 11 standards in 11 months!

As such, we will be sharing the Standards and what each of them encompasses, in our Newsletter on a regular basis. Please take the time to read them as they are shared.
