Year 10 Chemistry Investigation
On 1 September, the Year 10 Chemistry Investigation students explored Sealife at the Aquarium. Our tour guide, Lachie, informed us about water alkalinity, did activities where we measured nitrite and ammonia levels in water, and discussed the importance of water maintenance to accommodate marine life at the aquarium.
We also saw the penguins being fed and admired the many species of aquatic life shown by SeaLife. I found the jellyfish section of the excursion quite mesmerising, with the ambient lighting and serene atmosphere.
The excursion was entertaining and an excellent opportunity to apply our knowledge from the chemistry elective.

Today as part of our chemistry unit we went to the Melbourne Aquarium Sea Life, and had the opportunity to explore and learn about sea animals and how they manage the water in which they live. We learnt about the importance of regulating the water’s pH level and maintaining the safe level of bacteria, ammonia and nitrite in the water to suit the living conditions of the sea creatures in it. Besides the water quality we also learnt about the general living conditions of various sea animals, discussing how they live differently and how each enclosure takes into consideration the many requirements which need to be met in order for the animals to live comfortably.
