Book Week

This year’s Book Week theme was Read Inspire Grow. Schools all across Australia celebrated the wonder of inspirational books and appreciated how books help us to grow into not just better readers but also more knowledgeable and empathetic people.

The Year 7 and Year 8 students, dressed in an array of colourful book character costumes, began the week with a parade in the auditorium. Everyone was very impressed with their inventiveness and creativity. Well done to Grace Davis dressed as Alice in Wonderland and Emily Godfrey dressed as Aslan from The lion, the witch and the wardrobe for winning best costume. Congratulations also to runner up Leikny Heimdal-Reed for her costume as the Phantom of the Opera. There were also several group costumes that showed great collaboration and creativity. Well done to Labeeqa Ikram and Ava Hudaverdi for their Little Miss Books costumes, also Vera Wood, Ushuaia Selmes, Brooke Lamberton and Sabrina Winduss for the costumes from Roald Dahl’s book, The Lorax and as the Shrek characters Meeka Slattery, Tisha Soni, Elly Pikoulas, Selihom Kifle, Rianna Perrera, Arshpreet Guraya and Havana Weisshardt-Schiavi. The winners all received a certificate and prize for their efforts.

Marian College was fortunate to be visited by renowned author, Oliver Phommanvanh. Oliver has written many humorous novels and short stories.  He entertained students from Year 7 to Year 10 with his hilarious presentations and gave The Craft of Writing  and VCE Vocational Major Literacy students many thoughtful insights into the writing process. A Year 7 student from each English class won a signed copy of Oliver’s book ThaiRiffic for beating their classmates at a Kahoot quiz about the author.

The Resource Centre held some fun lunchtime activities. The Marian Big Book Trivia Quiz was hotly contested with teams from Year 7 to Year 12.  The teams tested their knowledge on classic books, young adult fiction, and famous authors. The amazing Year 7 team of Alexis Tremoulas, Vera Wood, Ushuaia Seles and Sabrina Winduss beat even the experienced Year 11s who were hoping to win the title. Other lunchtime activities included a Library Treasure Hunt where students roamed the library searching for clues. Book Club ran a well-attended book mark making session. Mr Milana hosted Who wants to be a millionaire? with the senior students. Well done to Isabela Cancino, Sylvia Trinh and Payton Blackmore. They may not have won a million dollars but did receive a great prize. Ms Csilla helped students decorate their own library bags. Students completed some wonderful designs with fabric textas and paints.

The Marian staff also had an opportunity to celebrate books and reading in a Staff Book Tasting Workshop. There was much enthusiasm and interest as teachers “tasted” and rated several new books in various genres, chatted about their favourite reads and borrowed some new books to enjoy.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to and supported Book Week.
