Level Low Downs

Prep

As part of our Science unit this term, the Preps have been loving learning about ‘how living things grow and change.’ We were lucky enough to have a special visit from Wild Action Zoo, where we were able to learn some interesting facts and features about various Australian animals. I think the crowd favourite was the adorable baby joey, Coco!

Year 1

The Year 1 students have been enjoying their Developmental Play sessions this term. This week, the activities included writing in science journals, programming BeeBots and fine motor skill development. It is always a lot of fun!

Year 2

The Year 2s have had a jam-packed fortnight. The excursion to Legoland, for our Design and Technology inquiry, was a terrific success. For this unit, we have also been conducting buoyancy and friction experiments which has been engaging. Next, we will start our summative assessment in which we create our own game that uses at least one force to move.

In Mathematics, we have started multiplication and looked at making groups.

For Literacy, we are exploring persuasion and emotive language. Learners have been looking for words ending in the suffix ‘less’ for structured word inquiry and for MSL, we have explored /oi/ in the middle of words and /oy/ at the end of words.

We have planned some fabulous activities for Book Week. What do you think we will be wearing?

Year 3

Last Friday the Year 3 students ventured to CERES environmental park. CERES is an environmental education centre, community garden and urban farm. We had a fantastic day exploring Indigenous perspectives and many different sustainable aspects. Throughout the day we looked at various native plants (Bush Tucker) and discovered their purpose for the Indigenous people. Below are some of the uses of bush tucker that the students discovered: Indi- “Pig Face which was used for an emergency water source and aloe vera for sunburn. ”Miller- “Lemon Myrtle which was used for putting in drinking tea. ”Oscar- “Salt Bush used to sprinkle on raw meat to make it tasty.” A big highlight was when we explored various story time symbols which we used ochre to paint Indigenous art on our arms and faces. We performed a dreamtime story called Tiddalik the frog and explored various indigenous artefacts from thousands of years ago. Our time at CERES has allowed us to come back to class and reflect on our learning to help us with our Inquiry project of designing a community park that is inclusive and incorporates both sustainable and Indigenous aspects.

Year 4

The Year 4s had a blast with Hands on Science at their incursion where they continued to investigate weathering and erosion. Here are some of their highlights.

‘I really liked how we used vinegar to dissolve sugar cubes and hole it made’ Tahlia

‘I liked how we used hot water to melt metal’ – Eamon

‘I liked searching for fossils and cool swirly shells. The facilitator was really nice’ – Ava

‘I really liked digging for fossils’ - Noah

Year 5

The Year 5 students are working hard on creating their podcast as part of this terms writing unit. Students have brainstormed and created a plan for their podcast. They are currently writing their script and sourcing sound effects to include. Soon they will begin the recording and editing process using an app called ‘Audacity’.

As part of our science inquiry unit we have been focusing on biomimicry. Students have started their inquiry project, where they are looking at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and finding a passion that they would like to investigate and improve.

A group of Year 5/6 students attend Somers Camp for 9 days, arriving back at Beaumaris PS on Wednesday. The outdoor camp supported the social development of all students and completed challenging and rewarding activities.

Here are some of their highlights.

  • My favourite part of Somers Camp was abseiling and the giant swing. - Violet D

Year 6

This week, the Year 6’S participated in a Beaumaris Primary School Youth Forum. Zoe Daniels, independent member of parliament for Goldstein, introduced the morning and explained the importance of young people’s voices surrounding issues relevant to them. The students researched and persuasively presented on a variety of topics. Including, social media, cost of living, animal poaching and inclusiveness at schools. In total, 12 topics were presented across the level. Upon the conclusion of each presentation, the Year 6’s engaged in the process of preferential voting. The Year 6’s voted ‘climate change’ as the most important issue, with ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights’ coming in at a close second. It was a fun and informative day.
