Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle

After learning about how Eric Carle made his beautiful painted papers, and having a go themselves, the students were very excited to start using their papers to make stunning collages. The Foundation students were inspired by Eric’s ‘Mister Seahorse’ and made a colourful collage of a seahorse swimming in the water.

They had to cut the coloured paper intro strips and then into even smaller pieces and glued them very carefully inside an outline of a seahorse leaving no white gaps. A joggly eye and sequins were added to make the seahorses sparkle and then cool colours were painted around the seahorse.

Lots of painted paper was left over and was too beautiful not to use again, so keeping with the underwater theme the students then made a collage jellyfish. First long green strips were cut and glued for the seaweed along the bottom of the ocean and some blue water bubbles. The jellyfish were cut round at the top and wavy at the bottom and long tentacles were glued underneath. They really looking like they are floating in the water!

The grade 1 and 2 students read Eric Carle’s book The Tiny Seed and loved the story of the little seed that survived in the face of over whelming obstacles. Stems of different heights were added first with green painted paper and then they went to work creating their flowers.

The students were encouraged to try different petal shapes of different sizes and colour. Just like in the book the bees and the butterflies come visiting as they have never seen such beautiful flowers! Finally, students learnt a new technique of flicking paint over a shape template to make these interesting splashes of colour.
