Do you know what these signs mean around your school drop off zone?

Kempsey Shire Council, Transport for NSW and NSW police are making school travel safer by supporting a safety campaign called “Safer School Zones".

While Local and State Governments are responsible for managing road safety issues, the school community has a very important role in keeping children safe around schools.

Safety tips when dropping or picking up children from school:

  • Make sure your children are in the correct car seat for their size and that it is fitted correctly.
  • Stick to the 40 km/h zone and make sure you keep an eye out for kids.
  • Watch for flashing lights on buses - the lights flash to show drivers that children are crossing the road.
  • Always give way to pedestrians.
  • Always park and turn legally around schools. U-turns and three-point turns are especially dangerous in school zones.
  • Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road to avoid the chance of them running across the road to get to you.
  • Ensure your children get out on the footpath side of the car to avoid opening the door into traffic.
  • Park safely and legally, even if it means walking further to the school gate. Parking signs are planned with children's safety in mind.
  • Drop zones are just that - do not park in a drop off zone.
  • Above all, model safe and considerate behaviour for your child.

Look out for our “What do these signs mean" signs at Kempsey Shire schools.
