Crafting and Creating
Students in Year 8 English have been working on creating an Informative Study Guide on a chosen fictional genre. Students explored a range of genres including Fantasy, Action Adventure, Romance, Mystery and Historical Fiction. Students used mentor texts and research to gain a deep understanding of genre writing to create a Genre Study Guide. Students used examples from their mentor texts across their Genre Study Guide.
To promote student agency, our Year 8 students have selected a medium of choice to creatively present their Genre Study Guide, such as a word document to create an Information Booklet, a power point presentation, or a poster.
Attached is a slide from Genre Study Guide of Sammi Willems.
Text Response – ‘Romeo and Juliet’
Year 9 classes have been reading a context study of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, by William Shakespeare to foster a deep understanding of the historical vendetta between two powerful families that erupts into bloodshed. The students enjoyed reading the play scenes in reading circles.
They conducted thorough analysis where they demonstrated their skills in making inferences about character, setting and context, and symbolism through engaging in interactive activities. Additionally, they made personal connections to textual themes and characters in discussion.
The students showcased their new learning by constructing a written analytical essay responding to a prompt.
