Years 5–6 Term 3 Newsletter

Welcome Back to Term 3!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! It has been wonderful watching the Year 5–6 students seamlessly settle back into their daily school routines following the break. The energy at school is fantastic, and everyone is buzzing with anticipation for the jam-packed term ahead.

With the upcoming ski camp, our highly anticipated school production, and athletics day right around the corner, we are looking forward to a term full of unforgettable adventures and fun learning activities!

Literacy: Mastering Persuasive Writing

In Literacy, our focus is firmly on mastering persuasive techniques. Students are learning to structure their arguments using the TREE model (Topic, Reasons, Evidence, Ending) to keep their writing organized and compelling.

As part of this unit, students have been actively practicing:

  • Figurative language to paint vivid pictures for the reader.
  • Rhetorical questions to engage their audience.
  • The Greek root 'Phon' to build vocabulary.
  • Complex sentences to add sophistication to their writing.

Additionally, in our Spanish learning, we have introduced the correct use of written accents on specific words and explored the proper punctuation rules for writing questions in Spanish.

Mathematics: Focus Groups and New Units

In Mathematics, we have successfully launched our teacher-led focus groups. These small-group sessions give students targeted, direct instruction tailored specifically to their individual learning goals.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have covered:

  • Mass and Capacity measurements.
  • Measuring angles and using protractors.
  • Reading analogue clocks and converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time.
  • Developing core strategies for worded problem-solving.

Looking ahead, our next major unit of learning kicks off in Week 3, where we will dive into Fractions, Percentages, and Decimals.

Ski Camp is Almost Here!
