3/4 Classrooms

Welcome back! It has been great to see everyone return ready to learn and settle back into our classroom routines for Term 3. We have an exciting term ahead, with our Athletics Carnival, Billy Cart incursion and whole-school production. We’re looking forward to all the fun, learning and opportunities these events will bring!

Literacy: 

In English, students have started reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Through this novel, we will explore the themes of friendship, differences and belonging, while examining how a character's words, actions and thoughts help us understand their motivations.

In Writing, students are learning about modal verbs and how they affect the certainty of a statement. They are also using the themes from Wonder to plan persuasive writing, where they will share their opinions and support them with evidence from the novel.

What do we wonder about Wonder?

Phoebe: I wonder if Jack Will is going to be a friend to August.

Milana: I wonder if they might all do a play or play a game together, and Julian will actually say sorry and realise that August is not that different.

Alisha: I wonder if there will be a science fair and whether August might win.

Romy: I wonder if Charlotte tries out for the play and gets the lead, but maybe she gets hurt and August plays the lead instead.

Hugo: I wonder if Christopher will come back and be friends with August.

Author C: I wonder if August actually manages to make a friend.

June: I wonder if the person who sat next to August might become friends with him if they get to know each other better.

Spanish

Students are learning key sentence structures to talk about amazing Latin American landmarks using persuasive language. They have been researching and discussing places such as Caño Cristales (Colombia), Machu Picchu (Peru), Lago Coatepeque (El Salvador) and other spectacular landmarks across Latin America. Students are practising how to describe where these places are located, their physical and cultural features, and explain why people should visit them. These activities are helping them build confidence in both speaking and writing. In reading, students continue developing fluency through persuasive sentences and short texts. In grammar, we are revising masculine and feminine articles and beginning to combine ideas by writing compound sentences.

Maths:

In English Maths, students have been learning about the perimeter and area of shapes. They have begun a mini project in which they are designing a theme park, using shapes with specific perimeters and areas as part of their designs.

In Spanish, students have been exploring the world of angles through a range of hands-on and collaborative activities. They have learned to identify, compare and describe angles as smaller than, equal to or greater than a right angle, using accurate mathematical vocabulary in Spanish. Students have searched for angles around the classroom, identified them in everyday objects and origami creations, worked collaboratively with classmates to classify angles, and learned how to measure them accurately using a protractor. These practical experiences have helped students connect mathematical concepts to the world around them while developing confidence in using mathematical language in Spanish.

Writers in Residence

Congratulations to Will, Felix, Finnegan and Tomi who are this weeks Writers in Residence.  Fantastic work team.  It was amazing to read about these famous Australian landmarks in Spanish.  Keep up the good work!
