Year 9 English: Exploring belonging through picture books

This term, Year 9 English students have been exploring the concept of belonging and investigating how texts can represent our connections to people, places, cultures and communities. As a creative culmination of their learning, students designed and created their own original picture books, transforming their ideas about belonging into engaging visual narratives.

Students experimented with a range of visual techniques, including colour, composition, symbolism, perspective, and imagery while also developing their creative design skills to bring their stories and characters to life. Through the process, students considered how both words and images can work together to communicate meaning, emotion and powerful ideas.

The completed picture books demonstrate the imagination, creativity and thoughtful engagement of our Year 9 students, showcasing their ability to communicate meaningful ideas about what it means to belong.
