Year 3/4
Reading
Students have been exploring different genres, with a focus on the many sub-genres within fiction and the unique characteristics that make each one special. They have also investigated nonfiction texts, learning how features, such as headings, contents pages and indexes, help readers locate and understand information. Students have been building their reading fluency through 'Fluency Pairs', supporting one another to improve their rate, accuracy and expression. They have revisited the skill of inferring (reading between the lines to uncover deeper meaning) and analysed persuasive texts, identifying the techniques authors use to influence and convince their readers.
Writing
Students have been applying persuasive devices in their own writing. After analysing persuasive texts, they began incorporating techniques, such as high modality words, emotive language and rhetorical questions, into their own pieces. These skills have helped students craft strong, convincing persuasive texts on a range of engaging topics.
Maths
Year 3 students have been focusing on place value, exploring odd and even numbers, reading and writing numbers to 10,000, expanding and ordering numbers, and renaming numbers in different ways. These experiences have strengthened their understanding of how numbers are represented and how they relate to one another. Students have also been learning about time, practising reading analogue and digital clocks, estimating the duration of events, and identifying the most appropriate units of time for different situations.
Year 4 students have extended their understanding of number and place value to include tenths and hundredths, learning to use decimal notation to name and represent decimals accurately. They have also been applying their knowledge of time to solve problems involving duration, including interpreting ‘am’ and ‘pm’ and converting between different units of time.
Inquiry
Students have been exploring a history unit focused on remembrance and celebrations. They have been investigating significant events, symbols and emblems that express Australian identity and diversity, and examining how these are celebrated, commemorated and recognised across the country. Students have also been exploring Indigenous perspectives, developing an understanding that different people can hold different views about the same event, symbol or celebration.
SEL
Students have continued participating in Friendology sessions, where they explore tricky friendship situations, learn about “friendship fires” and strategies to repair relationships, and identify mean-on-purpose behaviours. Alongside this, our RRRR learning has focused on recognising personal and cultural strengths, showing respect for diversity, and developing an understanding of respect for Country.
