2026 School Council First Meeting

School Council Meeting 1 – March 2026
It was good to get together for the first official School Council meeting of the year. We welcomed Julien and Beatriz as new parents on the Council, and Claire who was re-elected for another term. Together with Sarah, Aggie, Kate and myself (Tim), we will be the Parent Representatives, and will work alongside Luke, Graeme and Luisa to keep Newlands on track in 2026.
The first action was to elect the Office Bearers and School Council President. Claire Moore was re-elected as School Council President with unanimous support.
Treasurer Finance Representative – Kate Patsky
Education, Policy & Wellbeing Committee Representative – Julien Chichignoud
Buildings & Grounds Committee Representative – Tim Smith
OOSH Committee Representative – Sarah Small
PFA Committee Representative – Beatriz Reutter Susaeta
Spanish Subcommittee – Diana Alvarado Vergara (Aggie)
In other matters, there are some works that are due to be completed in the school to remove lead paint and other materials. These were scheduled to be completed during the term 2 holidays, although this is now looking unlikely. More information is expected from the VSBA to confirm an update on project timing.
The Finance Subcommittee had met during the term and an update was provided to Council. School fees (voluntary contributions) were noted to be higher than usual with close to 60%being received so far. This is mainly attributed to a successful Book Day and improved general awareness. The School is generally in a healthy financial position, which has enabled some significant investments in buildings, resources and staff over the previous year.
The PFA had met to organise the Welcome Picnic, which was a huge success, plus there are a number of other exciting activities planned for the year ahead. They are also working closely with the Spanish Subcommittee to plan the up-coming Fiesta.
The work on the new school brand is continuing. Details are being worked through for the brand rollout, including new materials, communications, signage and uniforms. The Uniforms won’t be ready or required until 2027, and there will be a lengthy grace period of a couple of years to allow for a smooth transition.
That’s all for now. Let’s get to work and continue to make Newlands great.
Warm regards,
Tim Smith
School Council Parent Representative
