Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,

It’s been an exciting time in Grade 3 as our students have been putting in their best efforts during their NAPLAN assessments. We are incredibly proud of the way they have approached each test with focus, resilience, and a positive attitude. A big thank you to you, our families, for supporting them during this time by helping them get a good night’s sleep and sending them to school well-rested with their equipment, water bottles, and tasty snacks and lunches, it really makes a difference!

In the mornings, our students enjoy our school-wide Circle Time, where they connect with classmates, review the day’s learning, and start the day on a positive note. Thank you for supporting your child to arrive at 8:45am so they can take part in this important start to the school day. 😊

Thank you for your ongoing support of our Grade 3 learners! 📚✨

English

Text-Level Reading

Students have enjoyed finalising their learning from our class text, Charlotte’s Web. We have now moved into our next learning unit, exploring nature and weather through poetry.

Sentence-Level Writing

Students have also been strengthening their sentence-level writing by identifying different types of sentences (such as statements and commands), completing sentences using because, but, and so, using subordinating conjunctions such as when and although, and unscrambling sentences.

Students have been drafting and revising and editing their own creative narratives. Students have also enjoyed being creative imagining and writing a new chapter concept for the story Charlotte’s Web such as introducing a new problem that Wilbur and the barnyard animals must solve together.

Maths

In Maths, students have been practising solving addition problems, exploring 2D shapes, and subtracting larger numbers.

Students have been applying their learning that if they do not have enough to subtract, they need to regroup from the next place value column before solving the problem. Student learn phrases such as do I have enough to subtract (if not they say no, regroup), and if they have enough to subtract then they know to say yes, do it.

Humanities

In Humanities, students have been learning about maps, continents, and oceans. We have been exploring and comparing climate zones, including locating the main climate zones around the world and within Australia. Students have also learned about key geographical features of the world, including the Equator and the Tropics. Students have briefly explored different climate zones, including:

  • Polar/Arctic Zones: Very cold areas where snow and ice often cover the land. These zones are located close to the poles.
  • Temperate Zones: Usually have four distinct seasons, with warm summers and cold winters.
  • Continental Zones: Similar to temperate zones but generally found in more inland areas of continents.
  • Dry Climate Zones: Areas with very low precipitation.
  • Tropical Zones: Found closer to the Equator (e.g., rainforests and monsoon climates). These regions often have wet and dry seasons.

REMINDERS:

  • Students are encouraged to be reading at home each night and swap their reading books in the morning each week.
  • We request students with ipads bring their own headphones that pair with their device, either wired or wireless.
  • Students need to have their own pencil cases this year; we recommend leaving them at school to save them from being left at home.
  • Please sign the BYOD user agreement so students can be using the iPads in the classroom ASAP: https://forms.gle/U6b7tSj6C8aRdvFG8. If students are bringing their own iPads to school, please ensure they are charging these every night as we have limited chargers in the classroom.
