Grade 6 Community News

Dear Year 6 families,
We’re really into the swing of things! With our new approach of moving between two classrooms, it’s been fantastic to see students embrace the extra responsibilities and independence. From a teacher’s perspective, getting to teach and connect with twice as many students is a real privilege.
Our 2026 TRPS House Captains have been selected! We would like to congratulate the following students for being appointed as House Captains for their houses:
- Peris: Kian (6E) & Mena (6B)
- Freeman: Dhiyash (6C) & Viyona (6A)
- Porter: Eva (6J) & Riya (6C)
- Riley: Levi (6H) & Kaleb (6F)
Last week, we received our brand-new Year 6 Rugby Jumpers, don’t they look amazing!? It’s been wonderful seeing students wear them with pride and step up as visible role models in our school community.
English:
Grammar: In Grammar, we have been learning to expand sentences by using adverbials to add more descriptive details. We also learned how to identify the two main clauses and the coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences.
Vocabulary: The words the students have been introduced to through our text, Kensuke’s Kingdom, are trepidation, trawl, incessantly, patrol, scoured, and agitated. The students learn the definition of these words and how to use them in their own writing.
Text Reading: We have finished reading our text, Kensuke’s Kingdom. We pause to reflect on the events of the text as well as to discuss the literary devices the author uses. In addition, the students have bolstered their understanding of the text through reading and taking notes from non-fiction texts about Nagasaki and World War II.
Sentence Level Writing: The students have been working on completing sentences using high modality words to persuade and using conjunctions because, but so to finish a stem sentence.
Maths:
Our unit on the order of operations has come to an end this week. Students have explored the importance of the following rules:
We applied these rules to a range of multi-step equations that included all four operations and investigated how using the order of operations affects the result. Students also learnt that basic calculators do not follow the order of operations, so it is important for them to be able to identify the correct order themselves in order to calculate more complex expressions accurately.
Looking ahead to our next unit, we will be learning about area and exploring how rectangles and irregular shapes with the same perimeter may not always have the same area. This unit will run for one week, after which we will move on to our next unit, which will focus on time.
Humanities:
Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about European empires. We have focused on the British Empire and how its spread around the world influences our lives today. Students have used maps to represent the expansion of empires and have engaged in rich discussions about the reasons European empires spread globally.
Sport:
Each Friday, we continue practicing for our upcoming Gala Day. Students who have been selected for a team will be informed via Compass.
