Grade 4 Community News

Dear Year 4 Families,
It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of Week 8! With only two weeks to go, we would like to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible efforts our students have shown in their learning. They have demonstrated increasing perseverance, resilience and kindness towards one another. Starting the year with several new learning platforms can be challenging, and we are very proud of the positive growth mindset our students have shown as they adapted and continued to engage with their learning. We are proud of the way they have supported one another and embraced new opportunities throughout the term.
English:
In English, students began exploring Nature Poetry through the text “The Eagle” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, which describes the powerful presence and solitary nature of an eagle. Through this unit, students are learning how different text types use specific language features depending on their purpose. They are also developing their understanding of how adverbial and prepositional phrases can provide additional details about actions and events. Students will expand their vocabulary by exploring a range of synonyms and antonyms and by using new words encountered in different texts. They will also investigate literary devices and deliberate wordplay, including grammar in prose and poetry, and how these choices help shape meaning.

Mathematics:
In Mathematics, students are learning to add larger numbers while developing their understanding of place value and number patterns to find missing numbers in addition equations. They will also begin a unit on 2D shapes, where they will explore and identify sides and vertices in a variety of shapes and learn how to classify them. Students will continue building their problem-solving skills by explaining their thinking and reasoning when solving mathematical tasks.
Humanities:
In Humanities, students have been learning about the Vikings, who lived during the Viking Age (c. 793–1066 CE). They are using maps and timelines to understand where and when the Vikings lived and to place important events in historical context. Students are also exploring what daily life was like for men, women, and children in Viking society. Additionally, they are learning about Viking longships and how these impressive ships allowed the Vikings to explore new lands, trade, and travel across Europe.
Respectful Relationships:
In Respectful Relationships, students are learning about personal and cultural strengths and how these contribute to positive interactions with others. They are developing teamwork skills, learning to show respect in a variety of situations, and understanding how respect affects those around them. Students will practice these skills through activities such as:
- Playing games to explore and identify teamwork skills
- Discussing ways to show respect in different situations
- Reflecting on how it feels to be treated with respect
- Recognizing their own strengths and how these can help them treat others with respect
REMINDERS:
• Harmony Day: Friday, 20th March
On Harmony Day, Tarneit Rise Primary School will celebrate the many cultures, backgrounds and traditions that make our community so special. Students are encouraged to dress in cultural attire or wear orange to show their support. Harmony Day reminds us that everyone belongs and deserves to feel safe, valued and respected.
• Students are wearing their school hats during recess and lunch in Term 1.
• Students should bring their fully charged iPads to school each day.
