Catholic Education Week
15-22 March 2026
Catholic Education Week was celebrated in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne this week. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools everyday.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is,
“Christ beside me: Walking in the footsteps of Saint Patrick”.
This year’s theme celebrates the significance of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of our local Church in Melbourne. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, our mother Church, is named after the saint of Ireland. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne to celebrate their Catholic identity, the pivotal role they play within their local community and the strength of the sector.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and walk the way of the gospel to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. There are 335 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne that educate around 150,000 students and employ more than 20,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.
This week St Mary's took part in several activities, including morning prayer focusing on the life and faith of St Patrick. In Morning Prayer students, learnt about how St Patrick used the three-leaf shamrock to teach about the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Students also went on a ‘Shamrock’ hunt around the school and created chalk drawings of shamrocks.
Our Year 6 leaders attended the St Patrick’s Day Mass at the Cathedral on Friday to celebrate Catholic Education Week.
Religious Education Around Our School
Our Foundation students have been learning about Jesus as the Good Shepherd. You can see their beautiful display in the Foundation area.
Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 have been learning about the five types of prayer. They have been collecting and sorting prayers of Blessing, Petition, Intercession, Thanksgiving and Praise.
To conclude the unit, students will present their own prayer to share with their class.
Please keep our Year 3 students in your prayers as they prepare to celebrate their First Reconciliation next Tuesday.
Graduate Teacher Mass
Congratulations to Sway Draper and Lisa Aspros, who formally celebrated their graduation at a Commissioning Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral last week.
