Role of the School Nurse
In keeping with our commitment to the care and wellbeing of each child entrusted to us, the school nurse supports students’ physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing during the school day. The school nurse is a qualified and registered nurse who provides first aid, supports students with existing medical and mental health conditions, promotes health and wellbeing, and works in partnership with families and external health professionals when needed.
While the school nurse plays an important role in caring for students, they are not a medical practitioner and do not provide general practitioner (GP) or specialist services. For this reason, the school nurse is unable to diagnose medical or mental health conditions, prescribe medications, or provide medical or therapeutic treatment that would normally be managed by a GP, psychologist, psychiatrist, or other qualified health professional.
Parents and carers, as the primary caregivers of their children, are kindly asked to ensure that any injuries or medical or mental health concerns that occur outside of school hours, including weekend sporting injuries, are appropriately assessed and managed by a GP or relevant health professional before the student returns to school.
This shared approach helps us maintain a safe, compassionate, and supportive learning environment and ensures that students can fully participate in school life. Where further medical or mental health advice, care planning, or documentation is required, families will be contacted and encouraged to seek guidance from their GP or another appropriate healthcare provider.
