The Moorabbin Primary School Community touch the land and think of the Bunurong People and surrounding Clans of the Kulin Nation who cared for the land before us.

We share our gratitude to their Elders past, present and emerging.

As we touch this land, we promise to treasure it, taking care of all its people,

animals, plants and waterways.

We at Moorabbin Primary School appreciate this land.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Did someone say week 9? What a term it has been so far!

I’m not sure about you but my legs are weary just thinking about what has been achieved this term at MPS. In case you missed some of the events this term, here is a little reminder. We had many sporting events including District and Division swimming, Athletics for our year 3 to 6 students, House Sports Carnival for the community under some very trying weather conditions yesterday.

In Music Ms Strain presented our school choir at assembly celebrating neurodiversity and harmony week with some beautiful cultural songs from NZ and Ireland along with a K-pop favourite! Our amazing parents and friends put on a highly successful silent disco.

The art pieces are being made in readiness for our Art show coming up later on in the year, more information to come out in term 2.

However, the greatest achievement is the application we see students embrace in and out of class and settling into the routines of our BSEM daily routines of the Berry Street model.  Year 3 and 5 students have completed NAPLAN testing negotiating and persisting through the challenge at the start. And we have one more week to go!

Firstly, I would like to take the opportunity to say a sincere thank you to our wider community. This year continues to display the magnificent community we have at Moorabbin Primary School. Each week brings another WOW moment to enhance the pride felt as a community member at MPS. The support shown for our academic programs, our parent workshops, our active P&F, our newly formed school council, our first well attended working bee, involvement at recent excursions and the support displayed at all the sports events.

Thank you to the grade 6 parents who put on the sausage sizzle at the house athletics carnival we so appreciated your efforts under very trying weather conditions.

HOUSE ATHLETICS DAY

Thank you Mr Yeaman!

I’d like to sincerely thank our hardworking PE teacher Mr Yeaman for his outstanding effort in delivering such a successful House Athletics Day, despite the challenging rainy weather. His organisation, flexibility and positive attitude ensured that the day still ran smoothly and, more importantly, remained an enjoyable and inclusive experience for our students.

What could have easily been a disrupted event was instead a genuine celebration of our school community, with students, staff and families coming together in great spirit. His commitment and care were evident throughout the day, and we are incredibly grateful for the energy and dedication he brings to our school.

YEAR 2 AND YEAR 4 BUDDY PROGRAM

We are pleased to introduce an addition to buddy program, which brings together our Year 2 and Year 4 students in a structured and supportive way. This initiative provides regular opportunities for students to connect, collaborate and learn from one another through shared activities across the term. By pairing younger and older students, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and build positive relationships that extend beyond the classroom.

Developing connections across year levels is an important part of creating a strong and inclusive school community. The buddy program supports students to build confidence, develop social skills and demonstrate leadership, empathy and responsibility. It also provides valuable opportunities for peer support, helping students feel more connected and comfortable within the broader school environment. We look forward to seeing these relationships grow and the positive impact this program will have on our students.

FARWELL TO MR LEEDEN AND INTRODUCING MR CHRIS GILLES

Mr Leeden will be finishing at our school at the end of this term, having recently been successful in another recruitment process that will see him venture into an independent educational setting. We congratulate him again on this achievement and wish him all the very best in this next chapter.

As Mr Leeden has been part of our community for some time, we have previously had the opportunity to formally acknowledge his contributions last year to the school and this information is for you to take the time to find Mr Leeden and say your farewells and well wishes.

We thank Mr Leeden for his continued work with our students and know you will join me in wishing him well.

We are pleased to welcome Mr Gilies to our school, who will be taking over the teaching load of Mr Leeden. Mr Gilies is an experienced educator with 15 years of teaching across all year levels

He has a strong passion for literacy, music and the arts, and we are excited for the energy, expertise and creativity he will bring to the classroom. We look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on our students and school community. Mr Gilies will be having a hand over and induction into our school next week to meet the class, staff and parents of 1L.

The biggest overwhelming moment of our community came this week. As communicated our staff stood up and advocated for better and more equitable learning conditions for all. This decision was not taken lightly by our staff, who are passionately committed to the students and community. However, change can only occur with momentum. We thank you for your support in disrupting your working week to support the MPS staff to take a stance. We were overwhelmed by the support and truly thank everyone.
