The Evans High school library celebrated Book Week 2024 by inviting writer and musician, Brad Christmas, to visit our school and speak to all Year 7, 8 and 9 students. His talk focused on:
- The importance of reading.
- His journey to becoming a writer, and the different styles of writing students can engage with.
- How personal experiences can inspire writing.
- His book, Saltwater Boy
To top off his already great session, he sang a few songs for us, accompanied by his guitar, which delighted students.
Girls Survive is a new series of short fiction books to hit library shelves this year. This series was produced by Capstone Publishing from the years 2019-2022. Part historical fiction, part adventure story, Girls Survive shows how girls fought for their survival during times of both tragedy and triumph, drawing readers in with strong characters and gripping action. The library will be steadily introducing more of this series over the coming months. Be sure to let us know if you want to see more of these or other books you’d like to see in the library.
The Australian Capital Cities books are part of a new Non-Fiction collection in our library. Each of Australia's eight capital cities has a unique history. Some, like Sydney, depended on convicts for their early survival. Others, such as Adelaide, refused to accept convicts and developed differently as a result. Having a reliable source of fresh water was a common requirement, which is why all the cities are located beside a water supply. Many cities struggled through their early years, until the 19th century Gold Rush provided them with the funds to build civic buildings, as well as roads, bridges and railways. Today, each of the capitals has its own character and attractions.
