What's been happening in the 5/6 Classrooms

Mrs Caldwell, Miss Howard & Mrs Nietvelt

This term, our Year 5/6 students' are embarking on an engaging journey through the Mappen curriculum with the theme 'Museums in Motion'.

Throughout this unit, they'll explore the rich tapestry of Australian history, diving deep into pivotal moments and the remarkable individuals who have left indelible marks on our nation. From the First Fleet to Federation, and beyond, students will uncover the stories that have shaped our identity and heritage.

What makes this unit particularly exciting is its integration into our English block. By aligning our reading and writing activities with the historical context, we provide students with a holistic learning experience that reinforces their understanding and appreciation of Australian history. It's not just about memorising dates and events; it's about connecting with the past in a meaningful way that resonates with them.

To kickstart their exploration, our students recently had the opportunity to experience history first hand by making a damper over a campfire. As they mixed ingredients and watched their creations bake, they not only learned about historical cooking methods but also developed a tangible connection to the past. This hands-on approach sets the stage for an immersive and exciting journey through the 'Museums in Motion' unit, igniting their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. To showcase their learning about this unit of work at the end of term there will be an opportunity for families to visit and see the wonderful work we have been working on. More information about this will be released closer to the end of the term.
