Including Specialist Subjects
Last week, our Foundation students went on a quest to uncover the mysteries beneath our feet. They are investigating what happens underground, where sunlight, water, and food are scarce.
As part of their exploration, the students buried a pair of undies underground where they will remain for seven weeks.
We predicted what we think will happen to them without these essential resources.
Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion of this experiment. It's a fascinating journey into the hidden world beneath us!
Foundation Handwriting Font Change
Some families have asked the question as to why the Foundation teachers are teaching a different font this year. Hopefully this explanation helps:
The decision to change to NSW font was requested by the Prep team last year and put to the whole school, who were happy to change. It has long been noted by teachers at the school that many of the letters in Vic Cursive caused difficulties for many students – lowercase p,b,r etc. These letters are simplified in NSW font. There is also evidence to suggest that a simpler font reduces cognitive load for students.
To avoid it being confusing for students, the English KLT decided that it would be best to phase out the use of Vic Cursive, so students who had already been taught with Vic Cursive will remain using it, and our current Foundation students onwards will be using NSW cursive.
As you can see from the image below, there are still a lot of similarities, but some letters are now easier for students. Note the slight change in the letters b, f, g, p, t and z.
Year 3 Melbourne Zoo Excursion
On Tuesday the 16th of April, the Year 3 students set out on an adventure to the Melbourne Zoo as part of a provocation for our BQT inquiry question ‘How do living things adapt and change to survive?’ On arrival, we were met by the amazing Zoo Teachers who detailed our schedule for the day and explained what we might expect to experience on our visit. We were not disappointed!
We visited most areas of the zoo and observed animals and insects in their environment. We were also given a look into how the Zoo staff provide enrichment for the animals that provide physical and mental stimulation which supports the health and wellbeing of the animals.
A big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers, we could not have done it without you!
Book Tasting
On Tuesday the 16th of April the 5 / 6 students got the opportunity to experience book tasting. Book tasting is where you get to taste yummy snacks and read different books that your teacher has kindly chosen for you. During the hour we got to really relax and calm down whilst enjoying some good books. It was a great time to view books that you normally wouldn’t choose, or pick to read. On behalf of all the grade 5 / 6’s we would strongly recommend this experience to all kids looking for a fun happy book to read.
