Positive Behaviours for Learning
At SFS, our PBL (Positive behaviours for learning) school wide expectations are:
Respect,
Responsibility and
Kindness
The whole school has a PBL lesson on a Monday at 1pm. This week and last week we have focused on RESPONSIBILITY: Engage and persevere with all tasks.
Here are 2 of our lucky recent raffle PBL winners who have been demonstrating our schoolwide expected behaviours.
National Walk safely to school day
Walk safely to school day is on Friday 10th May 2024.
The benefits of walking for children can help improve fitness, friendship, their confidence and even help the environment as we reduce transport pollution.
We encourage as many children as possible to walk to school or at least part of the way to school on this day. We will have 2 meeting points where we will have a walking school bus lead by some teachers. Parents can either drop their children off at this meeting point and walk to school with the staff or join the staff and walk to school with your children. When we arrive at school we will make our way to the school oval and do a lap of the oval. The two meeting points are:
- The Lynbrook community centre
- Figtree Reserve (corner of Alymer Rd and Waterbrush crescent)
We will meet at these two points at 8am and will be ready to leave by 8.10am.
Let’s get healthy together and walk to school!
Child Safe standards
The Child Safe Standards aim to protect children and young people, by requiring organisations to put policies, procedures and processes in place to prevent and respond to abuse. They aim to make keeping children and young people safe. There are 11 standards.
Standard 5
Organisations tell families and communities about how they keep children safe from abuse and harm. They encourage them to be involved in keeping children safe from abuse and harm.
Your organisation must:
• understand that every child is different and that some children may need more support
• help and consider the needs of children who: – have disability – are from different cultures – speak different languages – are unable to live at home –
• make sure children can easily get the information and help they need. This must be culturally safe and easy to understand
• make sure it is easy for children to make a complaint and understand the process
• consider the needs of Aboriginal children and make sure they always feel culturally safe.
Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS)
Good mental health means having a positive sense of wellbeing, coping with challenges and being able to realise individual potential.
I have started in the role of Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHaWLs) in schools as part of the MHiPs program. I have started training and professional development through Melbourne University alongside Christine and Angela who are part of our school MHiPs team. I am in the process of setting up an office in the breakout room off Learning Space 1. Any parents who would like to speak to me about any concerns about their child’s mental health or wellbeing are most welcome to come to school to speak with me. I am happy to do this in person or on the phone if that is more convenient. I am still learning, so I may not have the answers but I hope I can help you with resources or
external supports.
Twilight Market
Our annual Twilight Market and biannual Art show will be on this year on Thursday 7th
November 2024 from 5 to 8pm.
The cost of a stall this year is 30 dollars. This is an event we always look forward to each year. If anyone has a small business they would like to promote or students and families would like to have their own stall, please speak with me or email me rlenko@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au with details of your stall.
Please let your family and friends know as well. Let’s make this year’s market the best one yet.
Lunchtime clubs
We have begun our Lunchtime clubs for term 2. On Mondays we have the Fire Carriers, Tuesdays we have an Art club and Digital Technology club, Wednesdays Lego club, Thursdays Choir (with some additional Tuesday rehearsals leading up to special events) and Fridays Mini Vinnies and Rosary. Lulli has also been running some addition lunchtime training sessions for students competing in sporting events. If your child is struggling to find someone to play with at lunchtime, you might encourage them to join a lunchtime club. This is an opportunity to meet some new people, learn something new, be creative and have fun. It also helps build a sense of connectedness and belonging.
If you have any concerns about the wellbeing or mental health of your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. In my new role, I have more time available to speak with any parents who need support or help.
