MATHEMATICS : MENTAL STRATEGIES
This week and next week children are focusing on the following mental strategies at school. Keep up the great practice that is happening at home.
YEAR LEVEL | STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME |
Foundation | Counting backwards by ones within the range 30 – 0 -Start at 30 and count backwards by 1 to 0 -Can you start at any number between 0-30 and count backwards by 1’s
|
Year 1 | Count back – Count down from This is a mental strategy that children use when subtracting. Children count back down from the larger number what is being subtracted to find the answer. E.g. 17-4 Count back 4 numbers from 17, so 17, 16,15, 14 – how many left? 13 is the answer.
|
Year 2 | Forward and backward number word sequence by hundreds within the range 0 – 1000 – FROM ANY NUMBER Count by 100’s starting at any number up to 1,000. E.g. 231, 331, 431 and so on
|
Year 3 | Adding across a decuple When children add across a decuple they are adding over the next group of 10. So 45 + 7 will take them over 50 (which is the decuple). When children do this they use their knowledge of how numbers are broken up to assist them, e.g. If I start at 45 I need 5 more to get to 50 – and I know that 5 + 2 makes 7 so I add 2 more and now I have 52 which is my answer for 45 + 7.
|
Year 4 & 5 | Addition with re-grouping Children mentally re-arrange numbers according to their place value to assist with addition.
|
Year 6 | Distributive property – Multiplication without materials We can multiply larger numbers using the distributive property by breaking those numbers into smaller factors.

SPORTS NEWS
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Interschool Sport
Our Grade 5/6's played against Grayling Primary School. The weather was great and the students enjoyed themselves. It was great to see the excitement on their faces. We had a few students still tired from Cross Country, however that didn't deter them in giving their best effort. Well done to those students that give it all. Irrelevant of the result, it was great to see great sportsmanship.

GRADE 3/4 HOCKEY CLINICS
It was a fantastic experience having Hockey Victoria recently attend our school as part of their roadshow program. Our Gr 3/4 students learnt the skills of hockey through exciting game-based activities in an engaging, fun and safe environment.
While the roadshow is over, students can continue their hockey journey by joining a local Hookin2Hockey program at www.hookin2hockey.com.au With programs starting soon now is the perfect chance to get out on the pitch. Hookin2Hockey will allow children to expand on the skills they recently learnt at school, develop fundamental motor skills while making friends and having fun!

ST JOHN’S PAUL WADE CUP – SOCCER GALA DAY
Next Monday, May 6th our interschool sports soccer teams have been invited to compete in St John’s Soccer Gala Day – Wade Cup. St John’s will provide the transport and a sausage and drink for each child.
Students will need to wear their sports uniform. If they have soccer boots they may bring them, but will need to wear their runners. A waterproof/warm coat, their snack and water bottle are to be packed for the day in a backpack that they will need to carry. A change of clothes especially socks and shoes is suggested. These can be left at school for when they return.
Parents please approve the Operoo notification giving permission for your child to have a sausage and drink for lunch as well as giving permission for St John’s to take and use photos for their publications. A flyer was also attached to Operoo and sent home inviting parents to come and support your child and the SFS teams.
We are very grateful to St John’s for providing our students with this opportunity.
