Mindful Monsters – Inhaling Izzy
The Mindful Monsters Program is a Mindfulness program which uses memorable monster characters to help us learn portable techniques for calming the body and focusing the mind.
This week’s Mindful Monster is Inhaling Izzy.
Izzy focuses on slowing down her breathing and taking deep, regulated breaths to calm her body.
Inhaling Izzy knows that diaphragmatic breathing helps to lower our blood pressure and heart rate, reduce the levels of stress hormones in our body, balances the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our blood and improves immune system functioning.
Inhaling Izzy takes a long breath in through her nose while counting to five. As she breathes in, she imagines the smell of her favourite flavour of cake. Inhaling Izzy takes a long, controlled breath out through her mouth while counting to five. As she breathes out, she imagines that she is blowing out the candles on a cake.
Izzy takes 5 deep breaths, using the finger of one hand to trace up and down the fingers of the opposite hand – breathing in as she moves up the fingers, and breathing out as she moves down the fingers.
Five deep breaths help Inhaling Izzy to feel focused and relaxed.
