Academic Sports Program
Over the past term and a half, students from the Academic Sport Program have had opportunities to engage in a number of different activities and events. These events have enabled students to develop their own personal skills, whether that may have been communication skills, time management skills, coordination skills or any of their own personal goals for their independent growth. Students have had the opportunity to engage in events such as a visit to The University of Melbourne, a guest speaker and 2 primary school athletic carnivals.
The University of Melbourne Visit
Our Academic Sport Program students visited the most prestigious and number 1 ranked university in Australia, The University of Melbourne. This visit presented a fantastic opportunity for our students to explore potential higher education pathways, engage with university faculty and students, and gain valuable insights into various academic programs. We believe that exposing our students to the university environment will inspire them to aim high and pursue their academic passions with enthusiasm and determination.
During the excursion to the University of Melbourne, I got a chance to experience the future. I was presented with the old historic buildings, history, beautiful art, the modern fashion world, the labs, the robotics room, and numerous other things and opportunities. I was able to explore new ideas and courses I could pursue. We were treated as an equal and they made us feel welcome. They carefully took us through their educational rubric and helped us with our goals.
Em Jones- Year 11 Academic Sports Program Student
Guest Speaker
As part of our commitment to providing our students with diverse learning experiences, students were lucky enough to hear from our past school captain, Josh Crump. Josh shared with the students his school experiences while completing his academics at the college, managing both academics and sports while in VCE, and his insights into university life. Our students were thoroughly engaged and received advice to take into their current studies.
Diggers Rest Primary School Athletics Carnival
Our Academic Sport Program students participated with the facilitation of Diggers Rest Primary School Athletics Carnival which was held at Melton Little Athletics Track. Students had an opportunity to assist with set up, pack up, and assisting with the running of athletics events such as hurdles, triple and long jump, high jump, discuss and shot put. Our students were provided with valuable opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills while interacting with members of their community.
On Monday 22nd of April, some of the Academic Sports Program students attended the Diggers Rest Primary School Athletics Carnival. We assisted in running the events including the 100 and 200 metres, Discus, Shot Put, Long Jump, Triple Jump and Hurdles. Overall, it was a successful day. Thank you to Miss Klaromenos for organizing the event and hopefully we will have more opportunities to assist in different sports carnivals.

Kismet Park Primary School Athletics Carnival
Sunbury College was lucky enough to host Kismet Park Primary School Athletics Carnival on one of our ovals. The vibes were high, and our Academic Sport Program students had an awesome time. We were also very fortunate to have some assistance from 8 year 9 students who aspire to be in the Academic Sport Program next year. As one of the expectations of the program is to volunteer time, students in the program were put on a rotating roster, where they helped with the facilitation of the 100m and 200m events, long jump, discuss, shot put, timekeeping and measuring. By developing a roster, students were required to practice time management, active communication with their teachers and peers, and cooperating with their peers to ensure events ran smoothly.
On Wednesday the 1st of May the academic sports program students participated in the Kismet Park athletics by helping time, measure and encouraging the students. It was a really great time and an awesome opportunity to view potential pathways of employment. It was great to see ASP students come together for the same goal, to ensure that Kismet Park Primary School kids all had an excellent day while at Sunbury College.
