Principal Team's Message

Our Assistant Principals reflect on Term two so far

Term 2 Celebrations

Term 2 has started with several important events and celebrations for the College, staff and students across the school have participated in a number of activities and excursions.

Our Sunbury College Open Night held on Tuesday 23rd April was very well attended by families and prospective students, and we had over 100 current Sunbury College students volunteer their time to run tours with families, lead demonstrations of practical learning tasks in STEM, PE and Maths, and act as ambassadors for the school in other subject areas. Thank you to all the students and staff who contributed to the evening’s success; the feedback from visiting families was testament to the effort put in by all.

On Wednesday 24th April, the student leadership team led the ANZAC Day School Ceremony on the oval in remembering those whose lives have been lost in the line of duty. We also paid our respects to members of the Sunbury community who have served, including former students.

The annual Athletics Carnival took place at Keilor Park Stadium on Tuesday 30th April. It was a fantastic day with high participation numbers in the events, and some outstanding performances. Congratulations to Zac Dillon who broke the longstanding College triple jump record.

Kismet Park Primary school hosted their athletics carnival at Sunbury College on Wednesday 1st May, with members of our College’s Academic Sports Program running different athletics events, and supporting the participation of the Kismet Park students. Thank you to those involved in supporting the event and to Ms Demie Klaromenos for her leadership of this event as part of the program.

On Thursday 2nd May, students in Years 9 and 10 who have been part of the AGA ‘Flip my Ride’ program graduated from the course. Channel 7 News and Brendan Fevola were in attendance to celebrate the achievements of all the young people involved. We’d like to extend our congratulations to all those who graduated from the program, and acknowledge the work of the Middle School Leadership Team: Amelia Beardmore, Megan Fitzgerald and Christine Polonidis in supporting the students to take part.

Year 11 students attended the Careers’ Expo at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 3rd May, and spent the day engaging with exhibitors including universities, TAFEs, and training colleges. Thank you to Josh Pritchard, the Senior School team, and staff who attended the event.

Uniform

Now that we are in the midst of Term 2, the weather is cooler and we advise that students and their families check their current uniform to see if they are prepared and give thought to purchasing the new soft-shell jacket as another layer. The soft shell is sold for $90.

The College uniform can be purchased from the PSW shop located at 6/106-110 Gap Rd, Sunbury (lower level opposite Aldi). The opening hours are Wednesday – Friday 10am – 5pm. Saturday 10am – 1pm.

Uniform - Sunbury College

Students are NOT permitted to wear non-uniform items to and from school and whilst at school. At times, a minority of our students have been found to be wearing non-school items at school, including hoodies and track pants that are not Sunbury College issue. Wearing the uniform correctly sends a strong message about school pride and belonging at school. Staff at Sunbury College will continue to enforce a dress code, and where a student presents out of uniform, they will be respectfully asked to remove this and, in some cases, issued an appropriate consequence.

We recognise and thank the majority of students and their families who continue to support the school’s efforts to maintain and enhance school pride and our values by wearing the College uniform correctly.

Road and Pedestrian safety

The streets around our school are very busy, particularly at drop off and pick up time.

We ask that parents / carers please:

1.  Consider dropping students a couple of streets away and allow them to walk the last couple of hundred metres to school.

2.  Encourage their child / children to use the dedicated crossings and the underpass on Riddell Rd. Some students are taking a significant risk in navigating Riddell Road.

3.  Speak to their child / children about the dangers of navigating Riddell Road instead of using the underpass and pedestrian crossing.

4.  Do not use the front bus lanes or staff car park for drop off or pick up between 8 am and 9 am, or from 2.40 pm -3.40 pm, unless you need to access the disabled parking space.

5.  Communicate with their child / children about being patient when waiting for access to the pedestrian crossing on Riddell Road near the Riddell Road and Horne Street roundabout. Staff continue to provide support in controlling the flow of students across this space.

Attitudes to School Survey

Over the next few weeks, students will complete the Attitudes to School Survey. This survey is completed each year by students in government schools, and plays a very important role for the school in identifying areas where the school is achieving success and having positive impact, identifying how the school is tracking towards its goals, and identifying areas for future focus and improvement.
