YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Term 2

Senior School Update:

BEACON IMPACT PROGRAM

As part of Work-Related Skills Unit, Year 11 and Year 12 VCE-Vocational Major students participated in a careers program ran by the Beacon Foundation. Students learnt about employability skills and how they can transfer the skills they gain at school and apply them to a workplace setting. Students listened to a panel of employees from V/Line learning about the transport industry and numerous jobs within the company. After a lovely lunch, the students completed ‘mock interviews’, focusing on their ability to promote their skills to potential employers. Students also prepared lunch for our guests.

Year 11

Congratulations to Year 11 VET Sport & Recreation students who last week volunteered their umpiring skills at the local Primary school’s Lightning Premiership football and soccer competitions.

Our students were fantastic in their officiating and engagement with the younger students, receiving much deserved praise from members of the public and local primary schools.

Topic: Year 11 Biology Excursion to Biolab's "Body Balance" Program

Event summary: Year 11 Biology students recently visited Biolab for the "Body Balance" program, exploring hormone regulation of body temperature. They engaged with various equipment to measure key hormones firsthand, bridging theory with practical application. Hands-on experiments allowed them to consolidate classroom learning, enhancing their understanding and scientific skills. Overall, the excursion provided a stimulating learning experience, deepening students' appreciation for biology and real-world science.

Year 12

The year 12 mid-year exam timetable will be available for all students this week.

Exam week will be held the week of the Kings birthday from Tuesday 11th June to Friday 14th.  These are compulsory and will be an important step for their preparation for their final exams. We have had several sessions with the students on how to prepare for exams, so practice is the key!

Also, the GAT will be held for all students on Tuesday 18th of June. More info to follow.

As mentioned elsewhere in the bulletin, we were lucky enough to have Australian Diamond and Melbourne Vixen goal shooter Sophie Garbin speak to all our year 12’s as part of the high-performance mindfulness program.  It was a really informative talk – but a personal highlight was watching some of our girls meet their sporting hero.

High Performance Mindfulness Program:

This year our Year 12 students across all programs are partnering with the High Performance Mindfulness program. This is a highly regarding program that has worked with elite athletes such as Dusty Martin from the Richmond Football Club, Sophie Garbin (Australian Netballer), Morgan Mitchell (Olympic Runner) and more to build better mental practices is navigating life’s pressures and challenges.

Students will be exposed to ‘simple daily practices that help build their toolkit of tricks to help them blitz it when you need it most.. like coping with the pressure of exams, overwhelming study schedules, fear of failure, and the burden of expectation during their final year of school’.

Thank you to Australian Diamond and Melbourne Vixens netballer Sophie Garbin for coming to our College last week to introduce the program to our students!

Year 12 Art Making and Exhibiting

Students presented a Critique of their artworks and visual arts journal to their peers to explain their art processes, techniques, materials and art form used. The audience wrote feedback for their peers to guide their next step in creating their final artworks. From this feedback, students will also write a reflection from their Critique presentation. Super proud of all the year 12s who presented with confidence and pride in their work! Well done Art legends!

VM

THE GREAT RACE MELBOURNE

The Year 12 VM students participated in ‘The Great Race – Melbourne’. They were given multiple venues and challenges to complete within a set timeframe, planning their modes of transport and the route they will take. Students had a fantastic time navigating their way around the Melbourne CBD. Students are compiling their evidence into a presentation to where the champion group will be determined.

Work-Related Skills – Student Advocacy

As part of the Year 12 VM/VPC Work Related Skills program, students have been studying the role a union has in a workplace. Students were placed into small groups and asked to advocate for students rights, conditions and fair working environment.

Topics included:

  • No Access to the building prior to 8:40am
  • 1 toilet break per day, no toilet access during break times.
  • Mandatory 2 hour Wednesday after school study sessions
  • No access to the building during recess.
  • No kitchen access
  • 10min lunch time access then immediate exit of the building.
  • No mobile phones - as per state regulation
  • 10 minute extension into lunch time for any content not delivered in class.

Students had to back up their arguments with current policies and procedures in Victoria. Students collated their information to present to the class their topic and the reasons why they should or should not have that right at school.
