What's Happening at CHPS

PE News

Our District Cross Country training squad has begun its training sessions.  They are being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at recess for the next two weeks.  The teams will be selected on Tuesday, 7th of May,  with a confirmation letter sent home to the 10 participants in each age group as well as some of our emergencies.

In the past few weeks, we have had many students represent our school at Team Vic Trials.  Each of them gave it their all and made our school proud. Well done to...

Sustainability News

Congratulations, Croydon Hills Primary School!

Congratulations to Croydon Hills Primary School for completing their ResourceSmart waste module. This makes them a 3-star ResourceSmart School!

The school has many amazing sustainability initiatives in place including composting, rubbish-free lunch days, battery recycling, gardening club, recycled art projects, litter committee, walk to school day, student energy monitors, frog bogs, drought-tolerant plants, plants that attract pollinators and birds, and an Indigenous grassland.

To date the school has:

  • reduced CO2 emissions by 655 tonnes
  • reduced electricity usage by 628,923 kWh
  • reduced water usage by 7,859 KL
  • reduced waste to landfill by 1,112 m3
  • saved $385,000

Visit the ResouceSmart website to find out more about ResourceSmart schools in Maroondah.

E-waste and more collection - Registrations now open

Did you know Council are now accepting clean polystyrene, batteries (including car batteries), gas bottles, fluorescent light globes, cardboard, textiles, vapes and e-cigarettes at Council’s e-waste events?

Council’s recycling events are an easy way for Maroondah residents to recycle e-waste and other accepted items in residential quantities for free.  The next event is on Saturday 4 May between 8am and 2pm and bookings are essential.  Visit Council's website for a full list of accepted items and to register

Don’t flip that lid!

You may have wondered if it is best to leave a lid on a jar or take it off.  It turns out that not all lids are treated the same.  Follow the advice from our service provider VISY to ensure your lids are recycled correctly in Maroondah.

  • Glass bottles and jars with a steel or aluminium lid - keep these lids on the jar when placing them into your blue-lidded mixed recycling bin. During the recycling process, once the jars are broken down, a magnet passes over the glass to remove these metal lids for separate recycling.
  • Glass jars with a plastic lid, such as a vegemite jar - place the jar and lid into your recycling bin separately. This will increase the chances of the lid being recycled with other accepted plastics in your mixed recycling bin.
  • Plastic bottles - empty and squash the bottle then place the lid back on.  Keeping the lid attached helps these small lids get through the sorting process.  However, you do need to make sure you’ve squeezed all the air out of the bottle.  If you don’t, the pressure can pop the plastic lid off when the bottle is compacted by the collection truck, reducing its chance of being recycled.  Once the plastic bottle and lid is shredded for recycling, the shred is placed into a water tank.  Here, the plastic lid pieces float to the top and the bottle pieces sink to the bottom.  This allows the recycling staff to easily separate the two different types of plastics.
