Reading

This term, students will continue to build on the range of reading strategies they use to decode and understand different texts. This term we will focus on strategies such as analysing key themes and information from a text, and solving the meaning of unknown words. The objectives for our reading lessons are informed by the Systems of Strategic Action (SoSA). This framework is utilised school-wide to support students in developing a range of reading and comprehension strategies.

These lessons and strategies will be facilitated through the use of mentor texts which are integrated to our Inquiry focus, ‘How can everybody’s story be heard?’ These texts will encourage learning about First Nations peoples, histories and cultures.

Starting from Week 2, students will progressively build on their learning of First Nations cultures in a continuous Speaking and Listening mini project. This oral language task will be made visible to parents via Seesaw at various points throughout the term.

Writing

This term, students will learn about and explore a range of different text types. Students will consolidate their learning about Information Reports and deepen their understanding of its purpose and structure. They will then commence their learning on imaginative texts by using the weekly mentor texts and other First Nations resources as sources of inspiration.

These lessons will be completed in conjunction with:

  • Weekly handwriting lessons to support letter formation and direction according to the Victorian Script Cursive.
  • Weekly morphology lessons to explicitly teach conventions of English language, spelling and grammar rules.
