Year 3 - Middle Unit

Three week into Term 2, and we have been Busy Bees in Grade 3!

Cross Country

The Year 3 students took part in our whole school cross country on Wednesday 24th April. We ran 2 laps of the course which ended up being 2km and it was great to see everyone representing their houses by wearing red (Ebden, yellow (Chisholm), blue (Mitchell) and green (Dryden). We were extremely proud of all our Year 3 students and their efforts, and several students have advanced to the next stage, which will take place at Hanging Rock next week. Good luck to those students!

ANZAC Day Craft

Following our mammoth effort in Cross Country, the Year 3 students learned about ANZAC Day and why we commemorate each year. We read a story about a family who made ANZAC biscuits and sent them to a loved one who was fighting in World War 1, and even got to sample some original recipe ANZAC biscuits ourselves. We made red poppies as a part of our ANZAC Day craft activity, which turned out beautifully.

Lapathon

Yesterday we had our school Lapathon and our students were looking beautiful in their house colours! They completed as many laps as they could in an hour and all of the Year 3 teachers were very proud of how well everyone did. We were rewarded with icypoles at the end of the day and we have recorded how many wombats (which Miss Mann hid) we saw on our way around the school. Well done to everyone who participated.

Literacy

During reading, we have been learning to read non-fiction texts and summarise the main idea using technical vocabulary, key details in a logical order. Our summaries demonstrate our deep understanding of the informative texts we are reading.

We have had so much fun learning the features of explanation texts where we have been practising taking notes on The Honeybee. We use our key words and note taking to write detailed explanations that include simple and complex sentences to describe how the Honeybee’s antennae works and why a honeybee uses its stinger!

Maths

We have been continuing to be problem solvers in Year 3 by solving addition problems using written strategies to prove and justify our thinking. The jump strategy is a new tool we have added to our ‘Maths toolbox’, to solve addition involving 2 and 3 digit numbers.

We have enjoyed playing Game of 31 this week! Families, please refer to the below link to learn how to play the Maths game Game of 31. This is a great card game to play at home with your child to consolidate and develop your child’s counting and addition skills.
