We Are Called to Serve
As an Executive Team, we are currently reading a book together called ‘Heartbeat – Encouraging Biblically faithful Christian Education’. The book is published by Christian Education National (the association of Christian Schools that our College belongs to) and each chapter is written by a different leader in Christian education. So far, the book has prompted some rich discussions with the Executive Team. In the reading for this week a particular passage stood out to me, as follows:
Our schools heartbeat – its life force - is dependent on the commitment of parents and significant others who have a passion to see children understand Abraham Kuyper’s often quoted statement “There is not a square inch in the whole domain about human existence over which Christ his sovereign overall does not cry mine!” (Bratt, 1998, p. 461)
If God is genuinely involved in all of life, as his people we are not called to keep life protected, polished, shiny and beautiful, but to step into the spaces God has placed us in, using the tools, the gifts, the abilities he has given us, to serve and bless the community.
We have a beautiful school, our community is precious, and it can be tempting to think what we are doing here is creating a lovely Christian bubble that will protect our children from the world. In some senses there is real truth in that because our children spend so much time in this positive environment with incredible caring staff who want the best for them, that they are protected. However, we also want to form young people who can step into workplaces, families, the wider community, churches, sporting groups – you name it – and be people that bring blessing and serve those in need. We are aiming for our young people to understand that life is messy, painful and glorious and that they can navigate all of the situations head-on as people of hope. What a wonderful reason to have a school!
