Student and Staff News

Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on

Business Management

Last week Unit 3 Business Management students became business owners as part of their studies on operation systems. Students had to consider inputs, processes and outputs, stick to their budget and hopefully make a profit, as they ran their Origami Shop. Each team, consisting of a team manager and employees, had to purchase materials from Mrs Rook to produce and sell quality items. Students then became the customers and had to purchase the best quality product for the lowest price!

University Workshop

Last week Year 11 and 12 students were able to participate in a workshop delivered as part of the Deakin Engagement and Access Program, which involves student equity outreach. The purpose of the program is to break down the barriers in accessing education and help build aspiration and confidence to support students in making decisions about their future educational and career pathways. The workshop this week “Just Decide’ focused on giving the students the skills and tools to be able to make the ‘big and small’ decisions. The workshop was led by two Deakin University Student Ambassadors, Lucia and Lilly, and program leader, Leanna.

ANZAC Day

Last week, we gathered together in an Anzac Day ceremony to remember those who have served and died in war and on operational service past and present. School Vice-Captains Isaac Arnold and Emily Botterill read the Ode of Remembrance, the poem 'In Flanders Fields', and laid a wreath.

On Anzac Day, Year 12 student and Student Leader, Scarlett Munday-Terry, laid a wreath at the Dawn Ceremony held at Sawyer Park. School Captains Ulani Hobbs and Tom Luke represented our College at the 11am service.

We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

Year 9 Camp

Earlier this term, Year 9 students headed off on the Year 9 Eco Camp. Students Ella Maree, Riley O'Loughlin and Cooper Myers have reflected on their experience:

"During school camp in Anglesea we participated in surfing, kayaking and mountain bike riding. As well as taking a trip to the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery and the J Ward Museum in Ararat. Each activity was as fun as the last, and during the time we spent we formed new friendships, spent time getting to know others' common interests and overall having the best time."

"The Angelsea camp was a new experience for me, we tried lots of different activities. After we arrived, we headed straight to the cabins, I had three of my friends with me in my cabin and it was a nice comfy space. We went straight to surfing which was my favourite activity out of them all. We then returned for dinner, a lasagna which led straight into our trivia night. We went to bed and woke up the next morning ready for the big day ahead of us.

We took part in sea kayaking first and it was tons of fun, we had good instructors who taught us what to do and it was simple and fun. After lunch, we went mountain bike riding which was fun but tiring. It took lots of effort to get up the hills but we made it eventually. The next day we got up early and packed ready to leave. We jumped on the bus and headed home. We stopped in Ararat to take a tour through J-Ward. It was very interesting and exciting to look through and learn about. We arrived back in Horsham after a fun couple of days."

"This year for Year 9 camp we went to Anglesea. The activities we participated in while on the camp included surfing, sea kayaking and mountain bike riding. My personal favourite was surfing because of the nice weather and large waves I was able to catch. Overall Anglesea was a memorable experience that I would recommend for all future Year 9 students."

Catholic Education Week

This week, we are celebrating Catholic Education Week (29 April - 3 May), during which we are also celebrating 150 years of the Ballarat Diocese. The week is an annual opportunity for Catholic schools across the Diocese to celebrate their distinctive ethos and mission with their school and wider communities.

On Friday 3rd May, we will be joined by SMJ Horsham students and staff in the Stadium for a liturgy to celebrate the week and anniversary of the Diocese. The liturgy will begin at 12pm, and be followed by a sausage sizzle for both schools to enjoy celebrate the camaraderie of this special day together.
