Visiting VIS Athlete

Laura Hingston

The Level 6 students had the privilege of listening to an aspiring Australian athlete, Laura Hingston who is based in Melbourne and trains at the VIS (Victorian Institute of Sport). Laura’s story was truly inspiring. Laura dreamt of reaching the Olympics as a gymnast but suffered a career ending back injury. Her journey didn’t end there however, as she switched sports and is now aiming for the Paris Olympics as a 10m platform diver. Laura outlined her gruelling training schedule, dietary requirements and past achievements including a 5th placing at the 2019 World Championships. Here are some reflections from our Level 6 students.

Laura Hingston has inspired me to move forward and never give up even in the toughest times. When she got a back injury, she chose a new, fresh path to start over and achieve her Olympic goal. For my dream is to also become an Olympic swimmer one day, I have learnt that I must pour my tears, perspiration and hard work to in order to become not just a state swimmer, but a world-renowned Olympian. This incursion has definitely shown that if you believe you can do something, you are already halfway there. Eugene Lim 6C

I found Laura Hingston the Diver really inspiring. What most fascinated me was her complex weekly timetable. It's amazing how much she trains and works hard to be the best she can be. I myself want to be an athlete one day, so it was nice to meet someone already competing for the Olympics. Yireh 6M
