AROUND OUR SCHOOL

TERM 3 CASUAL DRESS DAY

The Term 3 Casual Dress Day happened on 5 September 2023, with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The NBCF is a not-for-profit organisation funding world-class breast cancer research. The NBCF has funded a broad spectrum of research that has deepened our understanding of breast cancer development and treatment – from improving breast cancer detection and ways to manage breast cancer risk, to enhancing patient quality of life and developing better treatments with fewer side effects.

On the day, Frankston High School raised $1835.65 for the NBCF. Thank you to all of those who contributed including those who donated, supported the Bake Sale and the many people who helped to make this day a success.

ANTI-BULLY WEEK AT FRANKSTON HIGH SCHOOL

We extend our appreciation to Kelly Gilbert, one of our School Captains, for leading the Anti-Bully Week initiative on the Senior Campus. Held from 13 -18 August, this initiative was inspired by the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Its purpose was to raise awareness and initiate important conversations about bullying within school environments.

HOUSE ATHLETICS DAY SUCCESS

During our 2023 House Athletics Day, the LEAD class, SLC and the Interact team of Frankston High School joined forces to raise money towards the charity of choice, RizeUp Australia

RizeUp is an Australian organisation that supports those who are victims of domestic violence. This is a charity that is extremely meaningful for our community, and we wanted to aid them with whatever we could.

Each student group held their own individual stall, with the LEAD class selling sausages, SLC running the bake sale and the Interact team holding a raffle, with prizes for each house group. On the day, we managed to raise $1,126 towards RizeUp. We are very grateful to everyone who supported this cause by purchasing something on the day. The groups all put in a lot of effort and time into ensuring the day ran smoothly and successfully.

The Interact team sold lots of raffle tickets. The winners of the raffle are:

❤️ Grace Rigby (Year 9) for Brim

💛 Nevah Dayan (Year 7) for Barrbunin

💙 Ms Beck for Yawa

💚 Ms Akumaran for Tir-rer

Congratulations to all winners!

Thank you to Mr Keane, Mr Christie, Ms Long, Mr Sutcliffe, Mr Crouch, Mrs Burton, Mr Rowe, Mrs Grech and the Finance Office for all their help and support.

NETBALL

We’ve come to the end of the winter season for League Netball, and all should be congratulated for seeing it out despite not yet having access to the stadium. Thank you to all the players who made the huge effort to get there every Friday, some of you playing twice, and representing Frankston high School with such sportsmanship.

This week’s photo features a dedicated group of junior players who stepped up to replace an absent senior team and played way above expectations. Well done, team!

Next term we are making new squads to really take it up to the competition. If you would like to be involved, contact me directly as it would be great to get the teams together and training as soon as possible.

I am assured we will be playing in the brilliant new Jubilee Park complex next term.

FRENCH STUDENTS

After a 5-week experience at Frankston high School, our 10 French exchange students have returned home for a short break before they resume their new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to make some acknowledgements.

Firstly, to the families who provided accommodation, support and friendship to our visitors. You are the main reason the trip was such a success and that the students are going home with an incredibly positive attitude towards Australia and particularly Frankston High School. You made this experience the trip of a lifetime for these students.

Secondly, to all the teachers who incorporated the French students into their classes. We all know that this is not always easy, yet you managed to make them feel not just welcome, but valued.

And finally, to a number of staff who went over and above: Mr Heyes for all his support throughout the whole organisational process, but also for driving twice to the airport, once in the middle of the night! Mrs Forsyth for taking care of the daunting amount of administration involved with making accommodation arrangements; Mrs Stewart for making sure all the departmental requirements were met; the IT Team for dealing with all their online difficulties; Mr Batchelor for constant support and making significant headway in enhancing and improving our Sister School relationship with Lycée Jean Zay, Mr Russll for his encouragement of the students and their teacher, Nathalie; Veronique LaPierre for the same reasons and her attendance at the farewell function, and of course the Language Department for all their help.

This exchange has been an overwhelming success due to everyone at Frankston High School. Thank you!

MATHS WEEK

Week 4 was MATHS WEEK! We ran a range of activities including the World of Maths Incursion. Students got to work on hand-on Maths tasks to solve real world problems. We also ran the Australian Maths competition and a range of Maths challenges throughout the week.

FANTASTIC READING EFFORTS

Each year we hold a morning tea celebration for our junior classes who have read the most through Semester 1. The winners this year were:

  • Year 7D with a total of 85,044 pages and
  • Year 8E who had read over 56,969.

Well done to both of these classes, on behalf of the English faculty, I hope you enjoyed this treat. Both classes were definitely excited as the food arrived in their classrooms. This is a celebration that I feel very fortunate to be involved in each year. Seeing students find books that they enjoy and to build such fantastic reading totals is fabulous for their wellbeing, engagement and learning. Please continue encouraging your child to read more at home, we work towards a pizza party at the end of the year to celebrate the two classes with the highest tally for the year. Some individual voucher rewards are also on offer. Just keep reading as every page counts.

BIO-STUDIO PROJECT

Last Thursday, 28 students from Years 7 and 8 participated in the first day of the Bio-Studio program funded through the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership and State Government.

In the first workshop students created a visual story of the history of plastics and met artist, Jessie French who works with sustainable bioplastics. They will continue to work with French to create a collaborative bioplastic artwork next term.

Workshop two involved students using scientific techniques to make living landscapes to test whether different plastics are biodegradable.

In the final workshop, students produced their own art journals which will contain their reflections, images and sketches of this seven-day project.
