SCHOOL OF POSSIBILITIES

SOP Exam study skills and wellbeing refresher for students and parents/guardians

Thursday, November 2

5.30pm – 6.30pm St Anne’s College

SOP families and students are encouraged to attend this refresher session to further develop exam study skills and wellbeing strategies.

In secondary, school exams are not a memory test but rather seek  to see if students can apply the knowledge that has been learnt during the year to answer any question

Study information for VCE/VM students and families

Successful students have successful study habits and work toward achieving their personal best. This means that successful students can make effective use of their available time to maintain a balance between commitments (work, sport), social and school.

  1. Give yourself adequate time to prepare; finish your summary notes first, self-test, mind-map, use cue cards from your summary notes and practice questions.
  2. Go over assessments and teacher feedback on learning tasks and identify areas to improve.
  3. Get your teacher’s advice.
  4. Learn from the people around you, get examples from successful students, study together and identify why their answers are good.
  5. Fix mistakes.
  6. Use an assessment planner: E.g., Subject, Goal, To do, Deadline.
  7. Leave time for “stand-out” study; practise questions, it’s ok to study open-book and open-time.

How can you support your child?

As a parent of a VCE/VM student, keep yourself informed. Stay connected via PAM, email and il giornale. You also have access to the VCE/VM Assessment Calendar. This is a live document, and the link is posted each week in the SOP section of il giornale.

Be aware of assessment schedules and dates. All students receive a course outline and assessment schedule from their VCE/VM teachers. If you do not have a copy, you can request one from your child’s teacher. Stressed students don’t always store detailed information well, so take notes of key dates and requirements.

Avoid making plans for family holidays around key assessment dates and exams.

Delightful 'Crafternoon' - Year 10 students and Kialla Gardens residents

Year 10 students delighted Kialla Gardens Retirement Home residents with a community leadership excursion.

To keep our precious residents safe all visitors were required to wear masks.

Inspired by Year 10 student, Olivia Jezewski (not pictured) the 'crafternoon', pairing students and residents in a creative and fun-filled session was inspired by the sheik millinery of spring racing. The fabulous hats made by the residents will be  proudly worn as they celebrate the upcoming Oaks Day and Melbourne Cup in a few weeks time.

The excursion was a great success shown through the joy of the participating residents, accolades from staff and the satisfaction from students. The residents were so humbled to have 'school children' care enough to come and visit them and share their crafty skills, leaving bright souvenirs to remember the day by. The staff were so complimentary of how college students presented themselves, from Olivia's initial communication and organisation through to the authentic care students displayed to residents during the visit. Smiles from both residents and students were wide as they said their farewells, with students unmasking a humble sense of community spirit as they left the elderly adorned in more than feathers.

Students pictured are (L-R):

Year 10 students, Hardit Singh, Alick Jarvis, Charlotte Seddon, Rylan Farren and Lincoln Trinder. The two residents featured - Dougie and Joan, are shown modelling the spring racing inspired garments that the students helped create - Dougie's boutonniere and Joan's floral fascinator. Students also show off their creations in the image.

Year 10 Food Studies ...

Students made delicious nachos in class earlier this week, with their teacher, Jacinta Cari.

Year 11 Biology ...

Students dissected Lilium flowers this week to investigate and examine the structures of flowers. Students had several questions about how the flowers were structured and learnt about how these plants have adapted to be able to effectively spread their pollen.

Important Year 10 Dates

We are very excited to confirm dates for the Year 10 Melbourne City Camp and Year 10 Formal. The Year 10 Camp will take place from Wednesday, October 25 to Friday, October 27, 2023. The focus of this camp is on building students' capability to use public transport, connecting students with higher education providers and enjoying some of the attractions of our state capital. The much anticipated Year 10 Formal will take place on Friday, November, 10. Both the Melbourne City Camp and the Year 10 Formal are compulsory school events and all students are expected to attend. If families have any concerns over their students' ability to attend, for any reason, I encourage you to contact me as soon as possible. In many cases, we can make adjustments and allowances to support all students to access these events in some capacity. Please mark these dates in your diaries. Students who are employed are advised to notify their employers of their unavailability on these dates.

Reminders about expectations

Pastoral Group attendance

Students should arrive at school in time to attend pastoral group each morning commencing at 8.55am.  This is an important part of the day and a time for prayer and reflection.  Teachers are able to follow-up with students and check in on how they are doing. Daily messages are delivered to students at this time.  It is vital that the school completes accurate records for attendance and the roll is marked during this session.

Uniform

It is expected that students wear the correct academic uniform to school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  On Tuesday and Thursday students are permitted to wear their PE uniform, again this should be the full correct uniform including the St Anne’s tracksuit pants or shorts.  Year 10 students completing the sports coaching elective are permitted to wear their PE uniform on Thursday in addition to the above.

Use of air pods and mobile phones

Students are not permitted to use air pods or mobile phones while at school.  These items are to be left in students lockers during the school day.  Parents are asked not to ring their child’s mobile phone while they are at school or expect them to receive text messages.  If you need to get a message to your child during the school day, please contact the front office who will deliver the message on your behalf.

Your support on these matters is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Sarah Baglin & Meredith Lia (SOP Leaders)

A hard copy was distributed to all students present in class on Friday July 21st by the subject teachers of: VCE Unit 3&4 Psychology, Business Management, and Vet Engineering Studies. If a student was away, please see the VCE Coordinator for a hard copy. We advise students to retain the VCE Exams Navigator 2023 until they obtain their VCE results.
