Stepping into the future...

Recounts and reflections from Year 10 work experience placements

The path to a bright and fulfilling future begins with a practical taste of what work looks and feels like and as Year 10 work experience students discovered last term, there can be many positive, even if unexpected encounters as they take their first, curious steps into the world of pathways, jobs and careers.

Below are two very different nevertheless, captivating recounts from Year 10 work experience students, Olivia Jezewski and Charlotte Seddon.

Olivia Jezewski - Work Experience at Ray Dobson Real Estate

I went to work with Ray Dobson Real Estate for work experience, they were able to have me for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The moment I walked through the door on Monday morning at 9:00 am, I was greeted with smiles as Terri, the real estate agent who I had been in contact with, introduced me to everyone. All the agents were very friendly. I was surprised to see how they treated each other like a family. The first thing they had me do was fold flyers, over a period of two hours I had folded over 200 or so. It was tiring and my hands hurt but it was worth it in the end, as I got to personally deliver them. A fresh family member of the Ray Dobson group, Bowen, took me out in the car to the area of the sold house on the flyers. Honestly I enjoyed walking about putting the flyers in mailboxes, I kind of felt like a real, real estate agent, and Bowen was very lovely to talk to.

On the second day Terri took me to a flood affected house, the inside had been pulled apart and was in need of a lot of renovation. By being there seeing the damage with my own eyes, made me truly realise how badly the floods had impacted people.

On the third day I met a man who lived in a lifestyle village. He was selling his home to pursue his dream to travel around Australia. The man was a crack up, he kept telling us about how his neighbours down the road liked to gossip, as well as his other neighbour who really enjoyed his wood fires. We listened to him while we waited for the lady taking the photos of the house to finish her job. Over all, it was a delightful experience and I took away so much from that. I will definitely remember it years from now.

Thank you Ray Dobson group for having me.

Charlotte Seddon - Work Experience at Shepparton Library

For most of Term 3, the year 10s set up and prepared to go on work experience. Work experience is an important part of our educational development. It allowed us to explore industries of employment that we are interested in. There were two weeks that we had the opportunity to go out, and I went on the second week. I chose to go to the Shepparton Library. I had a really wonderful time there, and made some good connections with the people who worked there. My supervisor was Corrine, and she was a really lovely lady. She taught me about online book catalogues and resources, as well as the true importance of libraries and the things they do for the community. The other staff were all very friendly to me and each other, and they were more than happy to support me with instructions and teaching me about some of the processes they have. It really encouraged me to visit the library more often for study and personal time. I found the environment and meaning behind the bookshelves beautiful and welcoming. It was a very successful work experience. And I would recommend it for the coming year 10s as a place to go if you want to try something new for work experience.
