Seymour College success at Seymour Show

Seymour College students showed they have what it takes to show cattle after celebrating a very successful first outing at the Seymour Agricultural Show.

The team of four students rolled their sleeves up and helped prepare the three Yapunyah Speckle Park x Angus steers with the help of seasoned cattle show campaigners Darby and Bryce McClaren. The boys showed the students what to do and how to act safely around the cattle in preparing them for the show ring.

Joining the beef steers at the Show were four Guernsey heifers kindly supplied by Ian and Cheree Galis of Strathmerton for the purpose of giving young people an opportunity to experience showing cattle. The classes were judged by Mr Darby Norris who was very generous in sharing his time and expertise with the students.

Seymour College Agricultural teacher, Ms Amanda McClaren, was thrilled with the success on the day.

“The Seymour College students did themselves and the school proud, with every one of them winning two ribbons on the day, one in the beef class and one in the dairy class.” Ms McClaren explained.

“I could not have been more thrilled, the students had a brilliant day, the cattle were extremely well behaved. The Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society cattle stewards, Edward Troutbeck and Leigh Arandt could not have been more supportive of our students at their very first show.

The Agricultural Program is a new program at Seymour College in 2023, with all students in years 7 and 8 undertaking agriculture as a term-based rotational subject and year 9 students participating in agriculture as a  semester based elective.

In 2024, Seymour College will be expanding its agricultural studies by offering Agriculture at a VCE level beginning with Units 1 and 2 in Agriculture and Horticulture Studies.

Seymour College Principal, Ms Debbie Oliver, is delighted with the interest in the Seymour College Agriculture Program.

“Agriculture is a key employment sector within our region with around 12% of regional jobs supporting the production of food and fibre. Seymour College is committed to supporting our students in developing skills and knowledge to support them in this area.

“This is an exciting time for Seymour College as we develop our Agricultural Program and build our Agricultural Campus with the support of the Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund and partnerships with the agricultural sector.”
