Tomorrow’s Leades for Sustainability

Tuesday 10 October was our first TLfS session with Pascale from the Port Phillip EcoCentre.

This session was extremely engaging with students learning about the six Boonwurrung seasons and how the Bunurong people very much depended on the knowledge of the seasons for their lifestyle. For example, understanding weather patterns to maximise the availability of food and shelter such as knowing that February March or as the Boonwurrung call it Wygabil-ny-ewin (Old Man sun), was iilk (eels) season and was when eels were fat and ready to harvest.

We talked about plants that can be eaten and Pascale brought a heap of Indigenous plants in that are local to our area for us to engage with. We learnt about the paperbark tree and how the Boonwurrung used this for a range of purposes including for bandages, sleeping matts, canoes, and for wrapping food up like Gladwrap. Harriet even found a paperbark tree in our school and used a piece of it to cover her cut!

We then went into our OSHC garden and picked some saltbush and compared this to the coast salt bush that Pascale had brought in with her. The students coated both species with olive oil and we roasted them on separate trays in the oven. Once they crisped up, we again compared the two and were all surprised how similar these tasted to store bought chips.

We also ALL noted that if the leaves were not completely crispy, they had a very distinct not so nice ‘leafy’ taste!
