Year 5 News

We made it to the end of another term! It has been a busy, at times challenging, but overall, very successful term. We would like to thank every student for their ongoing resilience throughout the weeks.

The highlight of the past fortnight has to be the 'Mini Elections' with the Year 2s and 3s. As a capstone to our current Unit of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, the students combined all their knowledge about the election process, advertising techniques and persuasive language into one final group task.

The task saw students first brainstorm a handful of areas/subjects that they were passionate about. These were to be turned into the 'parties that the students would be running for. Some of the parties included 'The Equipment Party', 'The Club Party', 'The Canteen Party' etc.

Once the parties and members had been chosen, the teams were set to the challenge of coming up with 5 things that they'd change or improve around the school, which included "Bringing hot food to the canteen", "Updating the footy oval" etc. These were to be turned into their 'bills'. Using their literacy skills, the groups created a script for a speech, using various literary, advertising and persuasive techniques. The next step was to put together an advertising campaign, that would help sell the concepts of their party.

Finally, the students took to the stands to present their speeches in front of the Year 2 and 3 classes. Once the students had all presented their bits, the younger children were then tasked with voting for their 'preferred party', in a relatively accurate voting process.

The Year 5s were giving it one last push to convince the younger students to vote for them.

We are yet to find out the results. The Year 5s will go through one final election process, with the preferential voting counts. Once the votes have been counted, the elected parties will take their ideas to the Student Agency Team, to see if their ideas can make a difference in the school community.

Taking advantage of the beautiful sunshine, the Year 5 cohort took part in a scavenger hunt. The task was to find various things that were around the school, either natural or man-made.

We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable break. Ready and refreshed for the final term in Year 5. Happy holidays everyone!
