Year Four

Dear Year Four families,

What a tremendous return to learning, all the students have shown that they are resilient, adaptable and balanced as they are getting deeper into Term 4.

The grade 4 students took part in a student-led investigation to wrap up our fifth Unit of Inquiry. Here, students had the opportunity to present what they had learned throughout the term by developing an open ended question. It was wonderful to witness the students' enthusiasm and creativity as they dived deeper into their learning.

Unit of Inquiry:

Our final unit of inquiry was launched!

Transdisciplinary theme: How the world works

Central Idea: Changes to Earth's surface happen quickly or slowly over time

Lines of inquiry:

  • A line of inquiry into what changes on the Earth's surface.
  • An inquiry into the time frame of changes on Earth.
  • An inquiry into how heat and pressure drives changes.

Students must comprehend what the Earth is comprised of by examining its various layers and landforms in order to comprehend how the surface of the Earth evolves. The students are already enjoying  the science-filled unit!

Reading:

The Year fours have been reading informative texts with a focus on procedural texts. They have been studying how to analyse texts so they can recognise a procedure's structure and features.  This is a fantastic fit for our newest unit of inquiry since it scaffolds the students' learning so that they can produce a scientific report.

Writing:

Students engaged in a writing provocation where they saw a movie clip of the continental drift from Ice Age. They engaged in a Think, Puzzle, Explore thinking process as a result. Students viewed the clip and then wrote down their predictions for the topic of the unit of inquiry. Finally, they explored the concepts that sparked their curiosity. They also asked any questions that came to them.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics students have been learning about the different units of measurement such as grams and kilograms for mass, millilitres and litres for capacity and centimeters, millimeter and meters for length. Students were able to build on their knowledge of fractions and decimals to understand and to be able to convert between the different units of measurement. In addition to this, students were exposed to the mathematical vocabulary of mass, capacity, length, litres, millilitres, grams, kilograms, centimeters, millimeter and meters to then be able to use varied scales instruments to measure and compare the length, mass and capacities of different sized and shaped objects.

Reminder, the Year Four Camp is fast approaching. This is a good opportunity to gather the items listed on the packing list ready for camp in week five.
