Class of 2023 – Let Your Light Shine

Over the last few days, we have celebrated our Class of 2023. Having been here two years now, it is amazing the growth that we have seen in these young men. I have enjoyed so many special occasions with them. I have seen them on the rugby and football fields, with memorable moments including me running the touchline for the First XV and refereeing for our Third XV and Fourth XV. I saw the highs of our First XI Cricket and Football and I will never forget the ISA Grand Final for the First XI Football Team and their penalty shootout win against Oakhill College.  Who could forget the screaming crowd. I travelled to Japan with a lot of these young men, and they were the finest of ambassadors for the College, their families and themselves. I have seen them on stage in Drama and witnessed special talents in the music sphere.

Their leadership has been exemplary, not just our elected leaders but the whole of the cohort. They have galvanised themselves together as one and lead with dignity, respect, and pride. From Supporters’ Days to the College Swimming and Athletics carnivals they have moved forward as one.

They supported each other through the tragic loss of one of their own, Archer Gray. They walked with his family and supported them, and they have ensured that he would be with them looking over them forever.

I have also had the pleasure of teaching some of this group. I have stepped in to take some Business Studies classes while teachers have been on leave. My fondest memory of this group will be my Economics class. Having taught for over 20 years I will look back on this class fondly. They are spirited and intelligent. They have views and are willing to listen to each other. They have been willing to learn and willing to seek feedback. They are not only model students but model young men.

Good luck Class of 2023, you will be missed. Go forth through the gates for the last time and ‘let your lights shine’.
