Learning in Action

Literacy

In Literacy, Senior students have been reading and discussing the book 'Ugly', written by Robert Hoge. Students were first introduced to Robert Hoge at the start of Term 3 by Mr Wight. We watched a Ted Talk video where he talked about his life and all that he has had to overcome. Robert was born with a massive tumour on his face, severe facial disfigurement and physical deformities. He talks about his many surgeries and what it's been like growing up.

During writing sessions, Grade 5 students have also been looking at descriptive writing and how we can enhance our sentences. Please see below some examples:

'The creature put its head above the water and did not see anyone.'

  • Slowly but surely the abominable creature put its head above the water. It looked around the green gooey swamp and saw nothing but misty air, dark green grass and trees dancing to the rhythm of the wind.' - Jack G
  • Wearily, the fearful-natured, pocket-sized mammal poked its fragile cranium above the revolting dirt coloured water to be puzzled by the sight of an empty deserted lake. - Noah P

Maths

To begin the term, the Grade 5 students have been revising and consolidating  their understanding of fractions. Students have been working on achieving the following goals:

- I can identify mixed numbers and improper fractions

- I can add mixed numbers and improper fractions

- I can subtract  mixed numbers and improper fractions

- I can understand the difference between mixed number and improper fractions

- I can represent fractions as a shape

- I can represent fractions on a number line

- I can identify the difference between improper and mixed number fractions

- I can convert fractions from improper to mixed number fractions

Starting from Week 3, students will be commencing a financial maths unit. It will certainly come in handy when students are beginning to plan their stall for Market Day!

Inquiry

This term, Senior School students are learning about Needs Vs. Wants. Driven by an exploration of Human Rights and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, students are exploring that fundamental elements that humans require to survive and believe it or not, that doesn't include an Xbox. As we work through this unit, students will begin to look at ways they can influence and improve issues surrounding human rights, others who already doing something about it and innovative methods to raise important funds.

Wellbeing

For Wellbeing students have been continuing to revise our Friendology program so far this term. Students have been working on remembering the difference between a 'friendship fire' (where someone upsets or hurts your feelings without meaning to) verses being 'mean on purpose' (where someone does something on purpose to upset or hurt someone). We have also been working on boosting each other up in the Senior School with the introduction of our 'Senior School Shout Out Wall'. Each week 15 different students are chosen to have their names and photos displayed the senior school, with a board underneath for students to write 'shout outs'. Shout outs might include compliments about being a good friend, thanking someone for helping them, a character strength that they have, as well as another number of things! This will continue throughout the remainder of the term, with every Senior School student having a turn being a part of the shout out board.
