Grade 3 News

Important Reminders

As per our school's SunSmart policy, all students are required to wear hats till the end of April 2024.

Important Reminders

  • School hats are required to be worn from now until the end of the year. Students will be required to wear them outside starting from next week.
  • Homework-  just a reminder of homework expectations: Mathletics and regular reading. It is beneficial to maintain a homework routine and to practise the maths skills learnt in class.

Learning in Action

Literacy:

Literacy: Over the last two weeks, students have been introduced to our Author's Study unit by studying picture story books by chosen authors. They have revised the skill of summarising a narrative and broadened their inferential comprehension by observing how the character acts, speaks, what they say and think. Students used the Story Mountain template to assist with plotting the events within the story, looked at character traits and the importance of the setting. These skills have been transferred to their writing and students used a story board to plot the plan for their picture story books.

As a class we will explore other books by the same authors to find the common messages or themes, along with their voice. Students will continue drafting their picture storybooks before publishing and illustrating them.

Maths:

In the last two weeks, students have been introduced to our chance investigation by learning the language of chance and looking at the likelihood of outcomes happening. They have spent time conducting their chosen experiment, recording the outcome each time. We have also started exploring fractions of a shape and students are working on understanding the numerator and denominator in fractions.

As a class, we will look at fractions of a collection and on a number line. Students will use their chance experiment to create a graph and analyse their experiment results.

Wellbeing

The Respectful Relationship topic for the term is Positive Gender Relationships. This fortnight we discussed what violence meant in relation to the school playground. Students identified 3 types: verbal, physical and emotional and brainstormed examples such as pushing, calling names and excluding people. The current Friendology focus is on identifying tricky situations so that they don't become a friendship fire. Students have continued to practise using a 'quick comeback' when presented with challenging behviour in role plays.

Inquiry:

The students started their Inquiry with brainstorming environmental threats within Australia. They then watched a short video looking at the state of the nation from an environmental perspective. Students were then asked if they could add any more information to their intial brainstorm. They then were asked to choose which in their mind had the greatest impact.

The Grade 3 classes will rotate for a session each week so that they are exposed to various aspects of environmental threats within Australia. These will include bushfires, agricultural run off, climate change and threats to the little penguins.
